Beyond The Spider-Verse Producer Promises No Generative AI In Movie

Chris Miller, the producer of 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, has confirmed that there is “no generative AI in Beyond the Spider-Verse, and there never will be.”

For those unaware, Miller’s comment on the matter stems from a statement made by Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra. Last week, on May 30, IndieWire reported that Vinciquerra told investors that the studio was “looking at ways to produce both films for theaters and television in a more efficient way, using AI primarily.”

Vinciquerra’s statement on the usage of AI caused one Spider-Verse fan to voice their concern on X/Twitter. In the post, they plead to Sony Animation not to use generative AI because it could potentially steal jobs from artists and ruin the film’s aesthetic.

Shortly after that tweet was posted, Miller responded to it and reassured them by saying there was no generative AI has not been used in either film, and there are no plans to do so in the future:

“There is no generative AI in Beyond the Spider-Verse, and there never will be. One of the main goals of the films is to create new visual styles that have never been seen in a studio CG film, not steal the generic plagiarized average of other artists’ work.”

An important thing to mention is that Miller’s statement explicitly calls out generative AI. As the name suggests, generative AI is used to create things such as words, pictures, or videos. As the Sony Pictures Imageworks – VFX YouTube channel pointed out, the studio did use machine learning tech, but it was to help the artist rather than replace them.
