Best beginner tips for building in LEGO Fortnite

Opposite of what you’d expect, building in LEGO Fortnite does not come easy. In fact, I think building in LEGO Fortnite is very difficult, which is why I’ve created this guide to help show you the ropes.

How to build in LEGO Fortnite

Building in LEGO Fortnite is oftentimes counter-intuitive and not user-friendly. Here’s my advice: play Sandbox mode to understand how building works, build on flat ground and use the snap feature, start with designs before trying to build your unique structure, and, especially if you’re in Survival mode, build your base after finding a central location next to Grasslands, Desert, and Frostlands.

Start with Sandbox mode

If you just want to get your feet wet with building in LEGO Fortnite, I highly recommend doing that in Sandbox mode. Here, you have unlimited resources and every build recipe is unlocked so you can build anything you want. You can also fly which helps gain different perspectives and access tough angles when building.

If you start in Survival mode, you’ll have a hard time with building because, one, you need to collect all the resources to build stuff which takes time, and two, if you misplace anything, you can’t quickly edit or delete it. There’s currently no edit mode with building in LEGO Fortnite which means you need to destroy blocks with a Pickaxe, which gives you back fewer resources, upon messing up. It’s extremely disappointing, I know.

Build on flat ground and use the snap feature

Since there is no way to level the ground in LEGO Fortnite, a key component to making building much, much easier is to start on flat ground. This can be easier said than done since basically everywhere has rolling hills, but there are a few areas in the Grasslands biome that offer flatter building surfaces.

Whether you find flat ground or not, the one thing you do need to know how to do is to use the snap feature. When building, you can hold down the snap button and then place your blocks to have them match up more easily. It’s not perfect, but it is a useful tool.

Use Designs first

My next pro tip to slowly become a master at building in LEGO Fortnite is to start with Designs. Honestly, I’m a huge fan of Designs in LEGO Fortnite. They’re full models of structures that you can place and then build piece by piece just like you’re building a LEGO set in real life.

Not only is building Designs a lot of fun, but it also helps you understand how to make your own stuff. You’ll see how all the pieces that are needed to make a good LEGO house are used including the foundation, floors, walls, pillars, roofs, and much more.

Build your base near Grasslands, Desert, and Frostlands

I made the mistake of building my first Survival base right at spawn. After making significant progress, I realized everything that I needed to continue was only available in the Desert biome. I spent an hour and a half looking around for a Desert biome and finally found one that was extremely far away from my base.

I tell you this story to warn you: before building your base, find a good Grasslands area that has the Desert and Frostlands nearby. This is only important in Survival mode, but it is an extremely important tip when it comes to building. The last thing you want to do is upheave your base and move everything hundreds of miles away.

And those are the four ways you can get started on building, learn the ropes, and eventually make your own masterpieces. Go out and put these tips to good use.
