beginner tips to get ahead fast

MultiVersus has recently released and is already one of the biggest fighting games in the world, or at least in terms of Steam charts. Understandable for a brand new free-to-play fighter, but still incredibly respectable.

If you want to pick up MultiVersus to play with your friends, you should do so, as you can play with pals across all platforms. Now all you need is to have the skills that win, and with the beginner tips in this guide you’ll have just that. Read through our advice below for everything you need to know to win in MultiVersus.

Floaty physics

If you’re coming into MultiVersus from other popular platform fighters like Rivals of Aether or Super Smash Bros., then you’ll probably be taken by surprise at how floaty the physics are in MultiVersus. Characters are given a lot of time to stay in the air, especially when combined with special attacks that often increase airtime or aerial mobility.

This will feel very different to other games in the genre and will initially put off players that have invested a lot of time in other games. Don’t get put off though – persevere and you’ll find the floaty physics are balanced pretty well across the cast.

Pick a character

It’s tempting to hop across the entire roster as you play, and that’s fine at first, but if you’re looking to rack up some wins online, you will need to pick a character. We have a MultiVersus character tier list to help with that. Once you’ve selected a character, you can learn the details on how they operate.

Their speed, attack speed, strength, damage, knockback – all of these become important factors in high-level battles. Continue to test the rest of the cast, but pick a reliable and strong character that you can fall back on in an emergency.

Getting on stage

The aim of the game is to stay on the stage while knocking your opponents off. Simple enough, but when you get knocked off it can feel frantic while trying to claw your way back on stage, as your opponents do their best to prevent that. Practice aerial moves with your character, see where the limits of your jumps and attacks can take you. This will make you feel much safer when battling off stage or trying to get back.

Sending them off stage

There’s another side to this coin, of course, and that is sending your opponents off stage. You need to build up their damage before hitting them with a powerful move to send them flying as far as possible. You can even battle while they try to get back on to finish them off, which can result in some very early KOs, if you’re good enough. Make sure to learn which of your attacks are best used once the opponents has enough damage to be sent flying.

Partner up

MultiVersus is good fun by yourself, but this is designed for you to partner up with a friend. Since the game is available across all platforms, is F2P, and has rollback netcode with crossplay, you can play with your friends regardless of what modern system they play games on. Make sure to partner up with a good friend, get on voice chat, and beat down some enemies in the 2v2 game mode.

Training mode

If you feel like it’s finally time to master those combos and moves, you need to hit the lab. Training mode is an essential part of any fighting game, and here you can truly narrow down exactly what you need to know. How much damage exactly does Superman have to take before being knocked out by Harley Quinn? Training mode is where you can find that information. There’s also a robust Tutorial present in MultiVersus, for anyone who feels the need to have a complete introduction to platform fighters.

Feeling perky

Your pre-match perks matter more than you might think. Make sure to think about how you play MultiVersus, and select the perks that complement your playstyle. If you forget about equipping the correct perks – or remove them after adjusting to their effects – you will notice. They show their worth once you’ve gotten used to the game.

Challenges

Like any free to play live-service game, MultiVersus includes challenges, and you can smash your way through these to unlocks rewards, bonuses, and in-game currency. This will all help you to unlock more characters and skins so you can enhance your MultiVersus experience. Challenges are a nice thing to work towards each time you log in, so make sure to take advantage of them.
