Barbie Director Says “We’ll See” About Ken Movie Spin-Off

The Kenergy might be building for a Barbie spin-off starring Ryan Gosling’s Ken. While a lot of focus has been on a potential sequel with Margot Robbie, director Greta Gerwig has seemingly teased a possibly unexpected followup to the biggest movie of the year.

Speaking with 60 Minutes on CBS, Gerwig and her husband Noah Baumbach–who co-wrote Barbie with her–chatted about all of their ideas for Ken that just couldn’t make it into the final film. “We had way too much material for Ken,” Gerwig said. “We would write, and write, and write.”

This led to Gerwig being asked about a Ken spin-off movie. The director laughed, before adding: “I mean, the truth is, you know… I guess we’ll see.”

Gerwig and Baumbach also revealed that Gosling was always their choice for Ken. They apparently even put the actor’s name in their script before he was officially cast for Barbie. That might also mean they planned for Gosling to sing his heart out as Ken early on in the process.

Most of the chatter recently has been about a straightforward Barbie sequel, especially since the movie has made over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Last month, Robbie said she “couldn’t imagine” a Barbie 2. But earlier this week she admitted she can’t rule it out either.

Barbie will be available to stream on Max soon, releasing December 15 on the service.
