‘Baldur’s Gate 3’ director reveals just how much content was cut

Baldur’s Gate 3 director and CEO of Larian Studios Swen Vincke has revealed developers cut a lot of content originally planned for the game.

Speaking to BAFTA [via VGC], Vincke confirmed the Baldur’s Gate 3 map was originally going to be a lot bigger. “You would be surprised to know that we actually had many more regions that we planned to make”, he said. “I was afraid the game was going to be too short originally, but I’ve notoriously always been very bad at judging the length of our games.”

He went on to confirm that at one point during development Moonrise Towers was actually made up of two towers. “We [eventually] shipped with only one tower [but for a long time, there was actually the ruins of the second tower [in the game], and then we removed that also.”

“The reason we removed the extra tower was purely productional. It was just, the game was getting too big and so we had to cut that out,” he added.  Vincke went on to admit that Baldur’s Gate 3 was a “very big” game.

Earlier this year, Larian confirmed it was done with Baldur’s Gate and wanted to move on to new things, with the studio working on two “very ambitious” new role-playing games that are both based on original IPs.

However, writing director Adam Smith recently confirmed that the size of Baldur’s Gate 3 is causing issues for developers. “One of the biggest problems we have now is that, whenever we’re talking about things, we say we did that in Baldur’s Gate 3,” he said. “We did a lot of things in BG3 when we think back to it.”

“You’re constantly trying to make sure that [players] are getting a new experience, and you’re not just repeating yourself, and you’re not just giving them content for the sake of content,” he added.

In other news, it’s been confirmed that the highly-anticipated Hollow Knight: Silksong won’t be announced at Gamescom 2024 because Team Cherry are “still cooking”.
