Obsidian can be a difficult material to find in Ark Survival Evolved. Lucky for you though, you have this guide to help you harvest all the obsidian you want.
There’s no doubt Obsidian can probably be found on every map in Ark, even the Fjordur massive new map. However, there are various places throughout The Island map that contain obsidian, but typically you will find an abundance of it in volcanic areas.
What Is Obsidian Used For?
While it isn’t rare, Obsidian is uncommon in Ark. Since it’s uncommon, it makes it a valuable resource.
- An Arthropluera Saddle needed to ride an Arthropluera will need 35 Obsidian to be crafted.
- An Artifact Pedestal used as a base to display an artifact will need 80 Obsidian to be crafted.
- A Camera will need 150 Obsidian to be crafted to allow you to take photos.
- Cannon Balls used to demolish strong structures will need 4 Obsidian.
- A Chain Bola used to ensnare larger creatures will need 2 obsidian.
Harvesting Obsidian
The best way you can harvest Obsidian is with an Anklyosaurus. However, if you do not have this dinosaur yet, you may use a metal pick.
A metal pick is typically used to harvest metal from mountain rocks.
Where To Find Obsidian
As mentioned, this is an uncommon resource located typically around volcanic zones. However, there are multiple areas in which it can be found on The Island in Ark. You can harvest the obsidian by breaking smooth black rocks from the following locations.
Frozen Tooth Slope
The coordinates for the latitude and longitude of this spot are 35, 57. On the map of the island, it will be the mountain region below the top mountain in the middle of the map. This will be above the small river flowing through the middle of the island.
While this game is not free to play, it is constantly going on sale. With a low price, you’ll have no issue grinding for materials, especially Obsidian. The Obsidian will appear as small shiny black rocks scattered on the ground among the other rocks at the base of the mountain.
Top Of The Volcano
From the Frozen Tooth Slope, you will head directly to the left on the map to the top of the volcano. There will be Obsidian scattered throughout the volcanic rock and flowing lava streams. They will be inside the volcano as well as on the side of the volcanic mountain.
Far’s Peak East
For the next location, you will head back to the right of the map, past the first location, and to the next mountainous area at 34, 82 latitude and longitude. Along the side of the mountain, you will find Obsidian dispersed on the ground. Luckily, Obsidian is a little easier to find than the element shards in Ark Fjordur.
Whitesky Peak
Around the Whitesky Peak, the very top left part of the map you will find even more Obsidian. The exact coordinates for this area are 20, 20 latitude and longitude. If you search the tree-filled area below the mountain, you should get lucky and find a few pieces.
In this area the Obsidian will be found under trees.
You will want to have warm clothes equipped, so the cold does not affect your health.
Miscellaneous Areas
The other various places you could find Obsidian would be random caves found throughout the edge of the map.
