, suggesting that there is still a market for the 7.9-inch tablet.

And while Apple released no new small tablets in 2020, in November of that year we started hearing rumors about a next iteration in the iPad mini line, which could possibly also end up being the last iPad mini to ever be released – iPad mini 6. Below is everything we know about the iPad mini 6 (2021) as of right now.

Apple iPad mini 6 release date

  • September or October, 2021
The surprise iPad Mini 5 release occurred on March 18, 2019. Based on that, we initially expected the iPad mini 6 to be released around the same date, but that wasn’t the case.
In addition, it’s worth noting that according to a November 2020 leak and as mentioned earlier, this may be the last iPad mini to be released, although this theory currently seems unlikely to be true.

Apple iPad mini 6 price and storage options

Currently, there’s no information to suggest a price increase for the iPad mini 6. Unless it gets a major redesign, which is possible, the iPad mini 6 will cost about as much as the previous generation iPad mini and have similar, if not slightly larger storage options. Here are the previous iPad mini’s prices and storage options for reference:

  • $399 for 64GB WiFi iPad Mini
  • $549 for 256GB WiFi iPad Mini
  • $529 for 64GB WiFi + Cellular iPad Mini
  • $679 for 256GB WiFi + Cellular iPad Mini

The iPad mini 6’s Cellular variant is highly likely to have 5G support.

Apple iPad mini 6 design and display

An early Twitter leaker claimed that an iPad mini 6 prototype existed, sporting a larger 8.5-inch Liquid Retina display, as opposed to the iPad mini 5’s 7.9-inch Retina display. An increase in display size might suggest a redesign for the mini 6, or at the very least smaller top and bottom bezels, which would let the display be larger without increasing the iPad’s overall body size.
Another rumor from around the same time suggested that the first mini-LED iPads are on their way. The rumor in question, by TFI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, said that the first mini-LED screen iPad will be getting mass-produced in the first half of 2021. Among the supposedly-upcoming mini-LED iPads, named was a 7.9-inch iPad mini. This leak seems more plausible than the previous one, as Apple has shown to be reluctant in redesigning iPads, but it can upgrade the iPad mini’s display technology, in order to rival OLED. A mini-LED display for the iPad mini 6 would result in improved contrast and image quality.
Supporting the idea of absolutely no design changes for the 2021 iPad mini 6, in early April we saw what were allegedly 2021 iPad Pro and 2021 iPad mini model dummies, shown below. If those images (courtesy of Sonny Dickson) are to be believed, the iPad mini 6 will indeed be exactly like the iPad mini 5.

In late January of 2021, a leak coming from David Kowalski and Pigtou alleged that the iPad mini 6 will have in-screen Touch ID and a punch-hole camera. At least currently, a major redesign like doesn’t realistically seem likely for the iPad mini, especially considering that the leak suggests Apple choosing a punch-hole camera over its signature notch. In any case, the leak was accompanied with the following renders, showing what the iPad mini 6 could be like:

More recently, in early June a Bloomberg report claimed something exciting – that the iPad Mini 6 will be redesigned this year. With not much beyond that in terms of information, we can expect an iPad Pro-like design as shown above, with minimal, rounded black borders and a familiar brushed aluminum back. This is, if the report turns out to be true.

On July 11, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman supported the idea that a redesigned iPad Mini 6 is on for release this fall. He called it “the biggest redesign” in the iPad mini’s history, suggesting that the mini will indeed get the iPad Pro-like looks this year.

Apple iPad mini 6 specifications

A recent tip has suggested that the iPad mini will finally have a USB Type-C port as opposed to Lightning, and while it likely won’t be getting Apple’s M1 chip, it will be powered by the A15 Bionic. The A15 is also expected to power the iPhone 13 series, suggesting that the iPad mini will not only be powerful, but highly up-to-date and futureproof.

According to the leaks we’ve seen and based on Apple’s upgrade history, we can expect the following specs for the iPad mini 6:

  • At least a 7.9-inch LED True Tone display (2048 x 1536 resolution, 326 pixels-per-inch)
  • A15 Bionic chip with 4GB or 6GB of RAM
  • 64GB and 256GB storage options
  • Apple Pencil 2 support
  • 8MP main camera, 7MP FaceTime camera
  • Stereo speakers (on opposite sides of the tablet)
  • 5G connectivity
  • USB Type-C

Apple iPad mini 6 software and features

The iPad mini 6 will be running iPadOS 15 out the box, which has improved multitasking and an updated Safari web browser. As this iPad will also support the Apple Pencil, users will be able to take advantage of features such as Scribble too. Scribble lets users write with the Apple Pencil in any text field, for example in the Safari app, as opposed to using a physical or on-screen keyboard.
