What is Alone in the Dark?

Based on the original 1992 game, the remake reimagines the classic single-player game now with updated graphics and much smoother gameplay. It keeps the suspenseful elements of the original, but now with modern consoles and PC to tell the tale with a much more modern experience. The game’s writer and director Mikael Hedberg is behind such titles as Amnesia and SOMA.

In this rendition of Alone in the Dark, players will get to play two characters. Following the disappearance of Jeremy Hartwood, they are drawn to the last place he was seen. The niece of missing uncle Hartwood, Emily (voice acted by Jodie Comer) and the private investigator Edward Carnby (voice acted by Stranger Things actor David Harbour). Casting will definitely elevate the tense and dramatic moments of the game. You will need to play at least twice through in order to discover the full story, as both characters have different points of view to portray.

Pieces Interactive’s game is an ode to the classic, keeping the elements of investigative exploration and creepy atmospheric vibes. Every creek, door closing by itself and quick glimpses of strange happenings is now extremely detailed. The reboot follows the same setting as the 1992 game, but new experiences are to be had.

Choose to play either Emily Hartwood (Jodie Comer) or Edward Canrby (David Harbour) in the survival horror Alone in the Dark remake.

Combat

The game’s spotlight teased some of the combat. Armed with a gun to take out creatures from the encroaching darkness. But what happens when you’re out of bullets? In true classic survival horror, you’re going to have to dodge your way out of situations. I’m glad we will have some sort of weapon to keep the monstrosities away, but I don’t think we can completely rely on weapons as bullets are not endless. It will certainly apply more tact to gameplay, managing resources and coming up with strategies to survive.

The point of view has also changed from the original. We now have an over-shoulder view which will definitely make shooting those horrific creatures much more intuitive. Remakes of survival horrors such as Resident Evil 4 feel much better control-wise when you can see more of the character’s view, letting you soak up all the details when investigating.

How Puzzling

There are also puzzle elements. The footage shows some clues that you can use to sniff out what to do next, but there are also puzzles that could lead to something else. According to writer and game director Mikael Hedberg, it’s up to the player whether they want to completely adorn that detective hat. It’s up to you how much you want the game to “help you find clues” and assist you in where to go next.

It’s up to you how much guidance you get from the game and to find clues to where to go next.

The Prologue

A quick demo prologue is now available on consoles and PC. I got to play it today live on our Twitch channel which gave a few surprises here and there. Overall the gameplay is smooth, and character pacing is slow but not drawn out. In this prologue you get to play Grace Saunders. For OG Alone in the Dark fans, you may recognise her character from previous titles. The girl is tasked with sending a letter given to her by the paranoid and skittish Jeremy Hartman.

The interactions with Hartman certainly set off alarm bells that something is going on. You get an inkling that the house and its inhabitants are not to be trusted. The demo lets you explore a little and unravel some clues. There is no combat but gives a quick glimpse into what to expect as well as the game atmosphere-wise. Grace’s calm and nonchalant behaviour adds to the unsettling mood that something is just not quite right…
