Alan Wake 2 Will be a Digital-Only Release

The recent PlayStation Showcase brought with it our first look at gameplay and in-engine footage for Alan Wake 2, and it’s fair to say that Remedy Entertainment’s survival horror sequel has made another strong impression. Following that showing, the developer has also unveiled plenty of other details in an official FAQ.

One tidbit in particular that catches the eye is the fact that Alan Wake 2 will be a digital-only release, with Remedy saying it has no intention to release physical versions of the game. Why exactly is that the case? The developer mentions multiple reasons, first among them being the plain and simple fact that, as Remedy puts it, “a large number of people have shifted to digital only”.

“You can buy a Sony PlayStation 5 without a disc drive and Microsoft’s Xbox Series S is a digital only console,” Remedy writes. “It is not uncommon to release modern games as digital-only.”

The developer also says releasing Alan Wake 2 as a digital-only game will allow it to be sold at the usual $60 on consoles, while on PC, it will be priced at $50. Of course, that’s just the Standard Edition. There’s also an $80 Deluxe Edition ($70 on PC), which will include an expansion pass (for the game’s two paid post-launch expansions) and several in-game cosmetics.

Remedy also says it did not want to release a physical version of the game that would require a download. “Finally, we did not want to ship a disc product and have it require a download for the game,” the developer wrote. “We do not think this would make for a great experience either.”

The studio has also offered new details on the upcoming sequel’s story and its two playable protagonists- read more on that through here.

Alan Wake 2 launches on October 17 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
