Alan Wake 2 Launches Digitally Only October 17th

Officially confirming the release date for Alan Wake 2, Remedy Entertainment revealed a brand new trailer today during the Playstation Showcase. The release window had been let slip earlier this week, but we finally get the confirmed launch day of October 17th. Along with the new trailer the developer confirmed that Alan Wake 2 will only be available digitally. This means no physical copies of the game will be released.

In an FAQ the studio explains the reasons behind the threefold decision. The first is that many players have now moved away from physical games, opting for digital instead. Another reason being no disc means the cost of the game can be reduced. Finally, the studio didn’t want to release a separate download that would have to be released at launch.

If you’re hoping that there may release a physical version later on, Remedy shared there are currently no plans for a disc version. The arguments behind this decision while fairly sound, there are bound to be players out there who prefer to own a physical version of the game, even to have it as a keepsake or collectable. There could be a collectable version in future, but as with many games these days they often don’t come with a disc. Look at the collector’s box version of Diablo 4 which doesn’t even come with the game.

Do You Need to Play Alan Wake 1?

Diving into a sequel without playing the first game will have you wondering whether you need to play the first game. According to Communications Director at Remedy, Thomas Puha, newer players won’t need to worry about this. The approach for Alan Wake 2 is to provide an experience not only for veterans of the game, but those diving into Bright Falls for the first time.

The sequel looks to provide a challenge to veterans of the game while remaining “easy to navigate” for those who prefer concentrating on its rich narrative.

Returning to Bright Falls as a Duo

Again something is not quite right in Bright Falls. However this time around we get a second playable character Saga Anderson. This “co-leading” protagonist is an FBI agent who is drawn to the small community of Bright Falls after its sterling reputation for…murder. A number of unsolved cases have attracted this talented agent, but she may have chosen the wrong town as things start to spiral quite soon after.

This leads Anderson to the missing writer Alan Wake who disappeared 13 years ago. Wake is trapped in the nightmare, and starts to write stories in order to escape. It looks like we will get to play Wake and Anderson’s stories in the order we see fit, after certain events have happened. The nightmare that is Bright Falls looks just as menacing as Wake is hunted in the Dark Place, shifting reality.

Alan Wake 2 releases on October 17th for PS5, Xbox Series and PC via Epic Games.
