Age of Mythology, an cult classic RTS that focused on the mythology of different cultures, and that was published over 20 years ago will be getting a much needed remastering. A fan favorite rocking a 93% on Steam all time, Age of Mythology was developed by Ensemble Studios, the makers of Age of Empires, and was published by Microsoft Game Studios.
In Age of Mythology Retold players get to choose their Gods from Greek, Norse, Egyptian, and the Atlantean pantheons, each with their own units and spells that can greatly effect the outcome of combat. There are also famous monster from Mythology as well that you can use to crush your enemies, such as Centaurs, Cyclops, Mummies and more.
Not a lot is currently known about the “Retold” version of the game, except that there is a short announcement trailer on Steam, along with some screenshots that showcase a much more modern looking RTS, at least in terms of graphical fidelity and UI. However, we do know that it will be coming to both Xbox and PC.
Age of Mythology will feature a 50 mission story-focused campaign, along with game modes for up to 12 players in competitive play, including a new game mode call “Trial of the Gods” that can be cooperated.
The Steam page does mention that Age of Mythology Retold will combine the best elements of the beloved Age of Mythology with modern real-time strategy design and visuals. Whether this changes some in-game mechanics or not isn’t 100% clear, though I think it can be inferenced. Hopefully for the better.
The release date is set to be sometime this year, but nothing specific as of yet. We’ll keep you updated if we hear anything else about it, as it’s a game we’re definitely looking forward to!
