A Tactics Ogre remake is coming to PC this November

Whether you call it a remake, or the Square Enix-preferred reimagining, the beloved tactical RPG Tactics Ogre is returning. New visuals, a revamped battle system, and more are a part of Tactics Ogre: Reborn, which is heading to PC via Steam in November.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn is a remake that returns you to The Valerian Isles, but with plenty of modern changes. Square Enix smoothed out the blocky, pixelated character sprites and re-recorded the game’s orchestral soundtrack for this release. Cutscenes are fully voiced, and you get the option of a Japanese or English cast. However, the biggest changes center around the tactics gameplay.

Square Enix is revamping the game. Tactics Ogre: Reborn‘s battle system is getting a full revamp, and the same changes are being implemented for the game’s AI. It’ll also get a “simplified and improved UI.” Square Enix hasn’t provided a lot of details on how in-depth these changes are, however. There could be some clues in the accompanying trailer. For example, at least one eagle-eyed fan in the YouTube comments believes the game features an individual leveling system for your party members.

Let’s get tactical

However, much of the game fans loved from back in 1998 should be intact. You and your party navigate battles during a terrible civil war as three factions fight for the control of Valeria. The turn-based battle system allows you to move units across a battlefield, where terrain and weather can change how you navigate and fight. Tactics Ogre first launched on the Super Famicom in 1995 and was later ported to the PlayStation in 1998 for the West. It laid the foundation for games like Final Fantasy Tactics, which also saw massive praise.

Reborn and deeper than ever, this classic tactical role-playing adventure enables players to fully immerse themselves in the world and intrigue of Tactics Ogre. In Tactics Ogre: Reborn, players will take control of a team of units on the battlefield and utilize the turn-based combat system to act strategically and gain the upper hand over their enemy. As players progress, they can recruit additional party members, experiment with various classes, weapons, magic and abilities, and make key decisions at several instances in the story that will ultimately impact how events unfold.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn launches on PC via Steam on November 11 for a not-so-insignificant price of $49.99 USD.
