Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown director Mounir Radi has given more insight into the game, including how it wasn’t originally 2D.

Speaking with Game Informer for its most recent issue, Radi said:

“It was not 2D from the start. I had the chance to work on some prototypes in 2D, but before going in to it, we studied the Prince of Persia series, just to be sure we understand all the legacy.”

Also mentioned is that Ubisoft didn’t command the team to work on a Prince of Persia title. Radi isn’t sure why it’s taken so long for a new entry in the series, but in this case, Game Informer points out that developers who had experience in platforming and world-building were finally available.

Speaking of the team, fans of the more recent Rayman games might want to keep an eye on that one. Game Informer points out: “Much of The Lost Crown’s team worked on Rayman Origins and Legends, and the main lesson from those games the team is applying here is a sense of musicality and rhythm in platforming”.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown will launch for Switch on January 17, 2024. While it was only just announced last June, development actually started in 2019. That means the project was in the works for about five years.
