PlanetSide 2 has had a bit of a rocky year, swinging from the heights of a 20th anniversary of the franchise to the lows of losing a key developer and proponent of the game with the departure of Michael “Wrel” Henderson. But Daybreak is clearly aiming to make 2024 a comeback year for one of the rare few MMOFPS games that actually deserves the acronym.
“In 2024, we are planning to focus on updates that value more long-term positive progress as opposed to short term changes that are likely to have minimal long-term impact,” Daybreak’s Rogue Planet team says. “Many core design elements have long suffered neglect, leaving little room for tweaks that would have an appreciable net positive result on the current state of the game. We intend to approach fixing the many problems PlanetSide 2 currently faces at a deeper, more meaningful, level. This means that there will be fewer small balance tweaks in favor of larger more impactful changes that take longer to implement but also have lasting effects.
First on the priority list is the rework of the Sunderer, which is what the bulk of the blog covers; the studio wants to make it a more interesting vehicle to pilot by dramatically adjusting slots and certs. But Daybreak also suggests that class reworks, a “new orthogonal non-combat system,” improvements to Outfit Wars, new facility types, new game modes, new and revamped alerts and missions, new vehicles, anti-cheat measures, and server merges are all on the table.
