New CinemaCon TMNT: Mutant Mayhem Footage Lives Up To Its Name

Fans got their first look at the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in their first animated movie in over a decade last month, but that was just the beginning. During CinemaCon, producer and star Seth Rogen introduced new footage that showed exactly why this film is called mutant mayhem.

“We finally made a movie where if you show it to your children, you’re not a terrible parent,” Rogen joked to the attendees. He also said they wanted a huge focus that leaned into the teenage element of the Turtles. The kids they cast as the turtles actually recorded their dialogue together.

“They said so many disgusting things we could not use in the movie,” Rogen added.

The footage began with April O’Neil (voiced by The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri) asking them questions about how they were made. Mikey wants to know if there are more people like April who will accept them. April says “No, absolutely not.” The Turtles think if they can be heroes to the public, they will be accepted like they were with April.

There’s a villain named Superfly (voiced by Ice Cube) on the loose and April is trying to figure out who it is. She even has a murder board and theories as nobody has seen his face.

There was a multitude of shots of Turtles on a rooftop looking more like the original TMNT at one point with no pupils, looking more intense and mature. Quickly cut to the Turtles going to find out who Superfly is. At the meeting spot, they find Bebop (Seth Rogen) and Rocksteady (John Cena), who we briefly saw in the trailer, and look absolutely massive by comparison to the Turtles. Superfly is an actual giant fly.

April filming it all from the shadows saying she’s going to win a daytime Emmy. We also get Wingnut, Ray Fillet, Leatherhead, Genghis Frog, Scumbug, and Mondo Gecko, who are all Superfly’s henchmen.

As you might expect, Mikey and Mondo hit it off immediately. And we learn Mondo is a hugger.

The audience was then treated to a montage of fighting and karate maneuvers, as well as a shot of the turtles dancing–including Mikey twerking. This will be the first animated theatrical Turtles movie since 2007’s critically-acclaimed but mostly ignored at the box office feature simply called TMNT.

TMNT: Mutant Mayhem hits theaters on August 4.
