WARNING: This post contains spoilers for Attack on TitanAttack on Titan is finally back with its highly anticipated season 4, part 3, episode 1. No doubt, it was a ride mixed with so many emotions; however, the sorrow and despair outweighed all the other feelings, and if you have watched the latest episode, you know what we are talking about. Yes, Hange’s death has been a heartbreaker for most fans.
Till the very end, fans hoped to see our beloved “Four Eyes” alive. Many viewers would have concluded that she might end up being in the same burned-up condition as we saw Armin in episode 18 of season 3. In fact, the next scene showed her waking up completely fine, which might have been a surprise for fans, but it was their reunion with all their former teammates who sacrificed their lives for humanity. The truth is, Hange is dead, and there’s no coming back for them.
How Did Hange Die?
MAPPA has been testing our patience for a long time, isn’t it? It’s been ages since we saw the previous parts of Attack on Titan, so it’s understood that fans don’t remember every event from the series. Hange is one of the best soldiers of the Survey Corps, and as expected, they fought the approaching Colossal Titans like an old hand. But what happened all of a sudden that they caught fire and started to burn down and ended up being roasted?
Well, if you don’t recall, let us remind you that fighting Colossal Titan is quite different from the other Titans. They possess a unique ability of steam emission, which they can do on will. Whenever someone tries to come close to Colossal Titan’s nape, they can release scorching steam to prevent the enemy. The steam is hot enough to burn the enemy completely, and the released pressure can throw them a few feet away. Hange was fighting hundreds of Colossal Titans at once, so we can’t even imagine that in how much pain they were going through at that time. So, when they stepped up to fight the Titans, they knew it was a suicidal mission.
Why Did Hange Fight The Colossal Titans?
All thanks to Floch for shooting the airship’s fuel tank right before Hange and her teammates were about to leave to stop Eren from continuing Rumbling any further. Well, Floch isn’t one to be blamed, either, as he was a dedicated Yeagerist who believed that only Eren could bring true peace to the world. So, he sacrificed his life for what he believed in.
In the meantime, the Colossal Titans were almost there, and the ship’s fuel tank was destroyed and needed a quick fix. To give time to the scientists and the other members of the Survey Corps to execute the plan, someone had to deal with the first few Colossal Titans, and Hange decided to sacrifice herself. She fought bravely and managed to bring down several Titans, and in the meantime, others managed to fly the ship to approach Eren and stop him. If it weren’t for Hange, either someone else had to give up their life, or all of them would have been crushed by the giant swarm of Colossal Titans.
