The massive space-faring Purrgil have made their live-action debut in the Mandalorian, and here’s all you need to know about these creatures.

The Mandalorian has done a lot to follow a single character through the Star Wars universe, expanding new ideas while also connecting different plot points from other shows and movies. Season 2 of Mandalorian contained many cameos of characters, with many fans hoping to see these live-action adaptations carry over into new projects.
While traveling through hyperspace in the first episode of season three, Grogu looks out to the side of the ship and sees a few massive shapes traveling alongside their ship. While these creatures weren’t clearly shown, their outline and ability to travel in hyperspace depict that of a Purrgil.

What Are Purrgil
Purrgil are massive whale-like creatures that fly through space and are able to enter and travel through hyperspace. By viewing these creatures and their abilities to travel through hyperspace, it led other creatures in the galaxy to study them and eventually create hyperdrives. Purrgils can grow to be massive, reaching about half the size of an Imperial Star Destroyer. These much larger Purrgil are known as Purrgil Ultra. Other Purrgils grow to be about to size of a small starship. Purrgil are mostly whale-like in appearance, with four long hind tentacles, with a bluish-purple skin. These creatures live exclusively in space, constantly traveling around using hyperspace and never residing on a planet.
Purrgils travel in packs, with the largest leading the group known as the Purrgil King. As they can fly through hyperspace, they often come into contact with other ships also flying through. It is not incredibly common, but also not unheard of, for ships to crash into Purrgils while flying through hyperspace. Purgils are only decently intelligent creatures, being shown interacting with nearby larger ships but with most interactions being seemingly accidental. They are not incredibly common around the galaxy and exist only as a legend to many pilots. While it is assumed these creatures don’t crash into ships on purpose, they are often seen as issues by pilots that usually are shot at on scene in order to protect nearby ships.
What Do They Mean In Mandalorian
Until season three of The Mandalorian, in the Star Wars lore, Purrgil have only appeared in the Rebels show, with mentions of them from pilots in other mediums. In Rebels, Ezra Bridger is shown connecting with Purrgil. In The series finale, Ezra uses Purrgil to latch onto Thrawn’s fleet and capital ship before telling the creatures to jump to hyperspace with the ships, Thrawn and Ezra in tow. The season three premiere of The Mandalorian is their second direct appearance and may mean more for future Star Wars projects involving Thrawn and Ezra. In season two, we see Ashoka searching for Grand Admiral Thrawn, who was last seen being taken by Purrgil and Ezra.
