Sons of the Forest, much like its horror-survival predecessor, allows you to craft using various parts harvested from cute and friendly critters. In both games, you likely have stumbled across the slow-moving turtles. The Forest allowed you to harvest their meat for food, as well as their hard shell. You can get a turtle shell as well in Sons of the Forest, but is it used for a similar purpose?

What’s the turtle shell used for in Sons of the Forest?
As of right now, the turtle shell is seemingly useless in Sons of the Forest. Unlike the original game, there doesn’t seem to be any crafting option for it whatsoever. In The Forest, harvesting a shell allowed you to craft a water collector — an incredibly useful survival tool. By propping up an overturned shell on some branches, you were able to store fresh rain water and dew. It was suitable as a source of water to either drink or store in a water skin before cave spelunking.

Sons of the Forest, on the other hand, apparently offers no such option — yet. I killed four poor, innocent dogs turtles to turn into water collectors. But my barbarity only yielded delicious turtle meat. I’m still walking around with the shells and nothing to use them on. As it is an Early Access game, there’s a good chance that the shells will be useful later in the development of Sons of the Forest. For now, however, us turtle murderers remain monsters.
At the moment, there isn’t much reason to slaughter our reptilian friends. River and lake water in the game seems clean enough to drink, and you can create a Water Flask early enough in the game. You also can’t use the shell to scoop water from a river.
