The game will support single player, cooperative and competitive multiplayer.

SEGA’s classic futuristic squash title, Cosmic Smash, is being reborn as an all-new virtual reality game for the PSVR 2 called C-Smash VRS, Sony has announced. The game is set to launch later this year, with a demo to be released next month on March 23rd.

The original Cosmic Smash combined elements of squash and block-breaking, inspired by the arcade game Breakout. Players used a racket to hit the ball and smash blocks through various arcade stages designed to mimic the feeling of playing in a virtual reality simulation. C-Smash VRS retains the same aesthetic and gameplay while enhancing the immersive experience with unique and captivating space-like squash courts.

An experienced team of game experts, including VR gurus Wolf & Wood and designers Cory Schmitz, Arkotype, created every aspect of the game. Acclaimed musicians Ken Ishii and Danalogue contributed to the sensory experience, while Rob Davis lent his art direction skills and Dan Pugsley lent his sound design talents to the project. Each of them has a wealth of VR development experience, having worked on a variety of hit VR games such as Rez Infinite, The Last Worker, Polytron, and Alba: A Wildlife Adventure, and many others.

With a dream team like this, C-Smash VRS is sure to bring a lot of excitement to the PlayStation 5 and PSVR 2 platforms when it launches later this year. The content of the March demo is still unknown, but it’s confirmed that the full experience will allow players to embark on a transformative journey alone, with a friend, or compete against players around the world in various multiplayer modes. The in-game controls are designed to provide a fully immersive experience that engages all five senses, with your avatar’s body and environment responding to the beat in a true display of synesthesia.

The term “synesthesia” – used by the developer – perfectly encapsulates the experience offered by C-Smash VRS. Synesthesia refers to a phenomenon in which individuals associate colors with otherwise unrelated elements, such as music or written letters. For example, the association of colors with shapes is known as grapheme-color synesthesia, while the association of sounds with colors is known as chromesthesia.

This technique is also often used in popular culture and fiction to transport the audience into a character’s inner feelings and emotions. C-Smash VRS aims to replicate this feeling by infusing everything with color and energy, allowing players to fully immerse themselves in a truly out-of-body experience like none other.
