There are many mysteries to uncover at Hogwarts throughout the school year. Once you are free to roam the castle, you’ll quickly realize how big it is, and how many secrets are tucked into every corner.
Once you’ve progressed through a handful of story events, you’ll be ready to start the Daedalian Keys quest. While you will spend a lot of time running around the castle to gather the keys and smack them into their corresponding cabinets, the prize at the end is well worth the effort. This guide will walk you through where to find each key, and what to do with the tokens you retrieve.
Astronomy Tower
Before you can discover the 16 keys scattered throughout the castle, you’ll need to head to the Transfiguration Courtyard and speak to Nelly Oggspire. She’ll explain that each key you find unlocks a specific cabinet. These cabinets each hold House Tokens that are needed to unlock the House Chest in the Common Room.
After speaking with Nelly, you’ll set off to find your first key in the Astronomy Tower. Start by heading to the Astronomy Tower floo flame, and make your way up the stairs from there. You’ll find the key near the top, and then follow it down to the cabinet in the classroom next to the floo flame you started at. To open the cabinet, you’ll need to smack the key just as it flies over the keyhole in the cabinet.
Defense Against The Dark Arts Classroom
In the Astronomy Wing, start by navigating to the Defense Against The Dark Arts Classroom floo flame. From here, head down the nearest staircase to your right. You’ll find the key by the rhino skeleton.
Next, follow the key back up the stairs you just came down, and take a left at the floo flame. You’ll find the cabinet at the end of this walkway, tucked against the wall on your right. Smack the key into place, and claim your next token.
Bell Tower Courtyard
In the Bell Tower Wing, navigate to the Bell Tower Courtyard floo flame. From here, head up the stairs on the southwest side of the room and go through the door ahead of you. Make your way up the staircase in front of you to find the key on the second floor.
Once the key is following you, continue up the staircase until you reach the top. You’ll find the cabinet next to the picture of a woman playing a hand drum.
Stone Dragon
Return to the Bell Tower Courtyard floo flame, and again, head southwest up the first set of stairs and through the door. This time, once through the door, head down the stairs to your left and then through another door.
In this room, you’ll find the cabinet you’ll need the key for to your left, on the north side. Head down the stairs and around to the stone dragon statue to find the key. Then head back to the cabinet.
Stacked Cauldrons
The next key is close to the Stone Dragon key. From the dragon statue, head east down the corridor until you find the stack of cauldrons. You’ll find the key next to the cauldrons.
Next, follow the key down the hallway into the room with the wine barrels. The cabinet is on the bottom floor of this room, tucked into the corner. Give the key another well-timed smack, and claim your House Token.
Grand Staircase Tower
Starting from the Grand Staircase Tower floo flame, make your way down the spiraling stairs. You’ll find the key near the first puzzle door you encounter.
Continue following the key down the staircase until you reach the second puzzle door near the bottom. Move towards the puzzle door, and then pass it on the left side and continue down that hallway. The cabinet will be on the wall to your right.
Quad Courtyard
In the Grand Staircase area of the castle, navigate to the Quad Courtyard floo flame. To find the key, make your way up the stairs to the southeast from the floo flame. After triggering it, follow it back down the stairs, towards the floo flame you just started at.
Once at the bottom of the stairs, head to the western side of the courtyard, staying on the ground level. You’ll find the cabinet tucked behind the spiral staircase.
Great Hall
From the Great Hall floo flame, face the dining tables, turn left, and make your way over to the fireplace. You’ll find the key flying around in front of it.
Next, follow the key across the room to the western side, and continue up a short staircase. You’ll find the cabinet at the top of the stairs.
Entrance Hall
In the Great Hall area, travel to the Viaduct Courtyard floo flame. From here, turn and make your way up the first set of stairs. Once at the top, continue up the stairs on your left to enter the courtyard. Go through the large double doors in the courtyard to enter the Entrance Hall.
Once inside, you’ll find the cabinet immediately to your left, near a boar statue. From the double doors, head up the stairs in front of you, and you’ll find the key at the top.
Central Hall
In the Library Annex, navigate to the statue of the unicorn surrounded by mermaids, in the Central Hall area. From here, head up the main staircase to the southeast of the room. Once you get to the balcony above that overlooks the statue, you’ll see another staircase in front of you. Go up the first set of stairs, and you’ll find the cabinet on your left.
Make your way up the second set of stairs and turn right when you reach the top. You should see another staircase in front of you. The key is just behind it on the other side.
Greenhouses Entrance
Head back to the unicorn statue in the Central Hall area of the Library Annex. The next key is near the door that leads to the Greenhouses. With the Greenhouses door to your back, you’ll find the key directly to your right, near the staircase in front of you.
Next, follow the key up the stairs and across the other side of the room. Head down the stairs, and you should see the puzzle door to your right. You’ll find the cabinet near the puzzle door, tucked between a wall and the staircase.
Library
Next, make your way to the Library near the unicorn statue. With your back to the Library floo flame, you’ll find the key on the bottom floor, between some bookshelves to your right.
Once you have triggered the key, follow it back towards the floo flame. You’ll find the cabinet on the northern side of the room, on the same wall where the floo flame is located.
Potions Classroom
The next key is located just outside the Potions Classroom. Navigate to the Potions Classroom floo flame and head through the door. You’ll find the key near the cauldrons at the entrance of the classroom.
Follow the key down the stairs until you reach the bottom where you’ll find the cabinet. Smack the key as it passes over the keyhole and claim another House Token.
Clock Tower Courtyard
For this next key, you’ll need to have learned the Alohomora spell, which allows you to unlock doors and chests. From the Clock Tower Courtyard floo flame, head through the locked door on the left side of the room. Make your way up the staircase until you reach the first level of the clock tower room above you.
While facing the giant pendulum, turn left, and you’ll find the key on the far side of the room. Follow the key to the other staircase connected to this room, and continue upwards until you reach the top. The cabinet is to your left as you enter the room.
Faculty Tower
You will need Alohomora to get the final two Daedalian keys located in the Faculty Tower in the South Wing area of the castle. To find the first key, proceed through the faculty tower entrance and head up to the second floor.
You’ll find the key flying around on the second floor, near the puzzle door. Once you have triggered the key, follow it back down the stairs you just came up. You’ll find the cabinet tucked under the staircase.
Hospital Wing
From the Hospital Wing floo flame, located at the top of the Faculty Tower in the South Wing area of the castle, head down the stairs nearest the floo flame. At the bottom, you’ll see the prefects’ bathroom door to your left, and a statue near it.
Turn right and make your way down a long hallway full of pictures. You’ll find the key is on the far end of the hallway. Next, bring it back to the cabinet next to the prefects’ bathroom door to claim the final token.
The House Chest Reward
Now that you have found all 16 keys and claimed every House Token, it’s time to head back to your house’s Common Room area. Make your way over to your house chest and deposit the 16 tokens you collected.
Upon doing so, you’ll be rewarded with a lavish Relic House Uniform. This dynamic cloak will be in the theme of your chosen house and will glow when you cast spells. The cloak is an Appearance though, so you won’t equip it like normal gear. Instead, you’ll need to change the appearance of one of your cloaks or robes by using the transmog feature.
