He is thankful for the demand.

Romancing Saga producer Hiroyuki Miura recently gave an interview regarding the series’ upcoming plans and stated that more SaGa titles are on the way, in addition to other remasters and enhanced ports.

The SaGa series is a JRPG franchise from Square Enix that has traditionally had greater flexibility in gameplay than its counterparts. The most recent remaster – Romancing Saga Minstrel Song – utilized a free-form scenario in which the character’s actions could shape the party and the world around them. The new port also contained numerous enhancements to improve replayability according to producer Miura.

Series director and general producer Akitoshi Kawazu previously teased that a remake and a new title are both on the way, and we speculated back then that the remastered could refer to Unlimited SaGa. Though it received mixed reception for its gameplay and graphics, its music and “Sketch Motion” graphics – combining hand-drawn 2D designs with 3D graphics – were met with praise, and the game could achieve a new success if it received the same enhancement treatment as other remasters, and Kawazu stated before he is thinking about it.

Another strong contender for the next remaster is SaGa Frontier 2. The game implemented hand-painted watercolor backdrops and character portraits to give the game a storybook aesthetic, and drew inspiration from Germanic and Anglo-Saxon influences, therefore establishing a unique setting even among other contemporary JRPGs. Despite the positive reception, the game was only released on the original PlayStation, further warranting a re-release with extra enhancements and increased replayability, something it was criticized for at the time of its release.

Minstrel Song is actually an enhanced remake of the first Romancing Saga that was first released on the PlayStation 2. Other singleplayer titles like Romancing SaGa 2, Romancing SaGa 3, SaGa Frontier, and SaGa Scarlet Grace all saw re-releases on multiple modern consoles in the past five years, leaving only Frontier 2 and Unlimited. The original SaGa classic trilogy– localized as Final Fantasy Legend 1,2,3 – titles were also re-released as Collection of Saga on Steam at other platforms, making additional remakes quite likely.
