Who doesn’t love a good ninja story?

Ninjas and Samurais have been a long-time staple of both anime and manga. The popular genres just wouldn’t be the same without them, and many modern shows, such as Demon Slayer, Naturo, and even Black Clover, contain ninja and samurai-like elements. Writer and illustrator Kengo Hanazawa first published his ninja manga, Under Ninja, in 2018.

The story has been serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Young Magazine since July 2018 and has since earned itself a large fan base. Kondansha has also turned the individually released chapters into tankōbon volumes. The first volume was released on February 6, 2019, and the ninth volume is expected to be released on January 6, 2023. Although the indie manga publisher Denpa announced in 2020, that it would be bringing the manga to English speakers, the first volume will finally be available in English on January 10, 2023. Fans will then have to wait a while before the second volume is available on May 23 and the third on November 21.

The announcement that Under Ninja would be making its way to screens in 2023 was made back in August, but the official Twitter account for the show only recently released a teaser trailer. Although the 30-second trailer does not feature any anime footage, it does show images from the manga and confirms the 2023 release. Fans will have to wait a little while longer before details like cast and air date are announced.

Under Ninja is set in a post-World War II world where Japan has created a new agency staffed with ninjas to help curb violence in the pacific. Kurō Kumogakure, a high-school aged NEET (not in education, employment, or training), is one of these ninjas. After a dry spell, he finally receives his first assignment from higher-ups. The 17-year-old ninja is given the chance of a lifetime and tasked with keeping Tokyo safe from international assassins. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Keep an eye out for more information on this up-and-coming anime as more details are sure to be released in 2023. For those who prefer their manga in English, all three Denpa volumes are available for pre-order on Amazon and Barnes & Noble if you want to read the action before watching it.
