Rasputin is an ancient artificial intelligence that players will encounter in Bungie’s science fiction FPS series Destiny and its sequel Destiny 2. The last of humanity’s defenders from a bygone era, Rasputin’s wealth of knowledge and power poses a threat to the enemies of humanity.
With the threats to humanity ever-changing in their tactics, strength and allegiances, the Guardians will do everything they can to secure the upper hand and secure allies to better the odds. With this ancient Warmind being a very different kind of ally, humanity’s enemies are eager to see him destroyed. Here’s everything we know about the AI Rasputin.
Rasputin During The Collapse
Centuries before the events of Destiny, the Darkness made its presence known to humanity and the Traveler, bringing forth the years of conflict that still rage in the modern day. Rasputin was one of humanity’s advanced AI defense systems, and it was one of the first to detect the approaching Darkness. Realizing the futility of fighting and dying to protect humanity against such overwhelming odds, Rasputin reprogrammed itself to have a greater independence and cut off his connected systems, going dark and off the grid in a final bid to protect itself.
While most of humanity and the other Warminds were cut down by the Darkness’ forces, Rasputin and his stockpiled weapons systems lay dormant and untouched by generations of conflict. One of his weapon assets many years later would be reborn into an Exo by a Ghost, now going by the name Felwinter. Realizing this incursion was the first step into a larger ploy by the Iron Lords to plunder his weapon stockpiles, Rasputin partially re-activated from his passive dormancy and went on the offensive, slaughtering dozens of Guardians before their forces withdrew and sealed away sections of his stockpiles. Content that he would be left alone, Rasputin powered down his weapons but maintained active surveillance on the Guardians to better understand their motives and the current state of affairs in the galaxy.
Rasputin In The Present
After the Guardians learned of the information databanks and further weapons caches hidden deep beneath Rasputin, Destiny players take part in a mission — the Fallen S.A.B.E.R. strike — to drive the House of Devils out of Rasputin’s deep store houses and deny them access to his resources. Seeing a chance to ally themselves with this ancient AI, Osiris would later confront Rasputin and demand to know where its loyalties lie, as it is beyond the point of being able to keep out of the wider conflicts in the galaxy like the recent incursions by the Witch Queen.
Rasputin would relent and tell Osiris it was still allied to the safeguarding of humanity, but it made clear that it intends to operate on its own terms in fulfilling this goal. Rasputin stayed true to its word, surveying and combating the forces of the Darkness openly whenever it could, until one day a massive pyramid ship approached the moon of Io. Rasputin targeted the ship with its weapons arrays, but its fire proved ineffective, and the pyramid ship easily disabled its systems and crippled its combat ability. Ana Bray, a Guardian that has extensively studied and cataloged information about Rasputin, would recover a fragment of its AI before evacuating back to the Last City.
