The DLC concludes the story of Jack’s travels through time and space

Publisher Square Enix and developer Team Ninja have announced in a new trailer that Different Future, the final DLC of the Action RPG Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, is to be released on January 27 of next year.

In Different Future, the third installment in the Deluxe Edition season pass, the story of Jack and his friends traveling through time and space will come to a conclusion. The expansion will add the Musketeer class, which will allow you to use guns for the first time. Even though it is technically a long-ranged class, the job will still implement short-ranged attacks as seen in the trailer, in addition to what appears to be bullets with wide area effects and special properties.

Spoiler for the Main Story ending

New players will also be able to change their outfits to the ‘Warrior of Light’ appearance. This fact implies that this expansion might indeed be pursuing a different narrative for the protagonist Jack; one in which he doesn’t end up as Garland. Garland is the main villain of the original Final Fantasy – the canon sequel to Strangers of Paradise – but the main story of this new Origins spinoff recontextualizes Garland as a tragic hero named Jack who sacrificed himself to secretly help cultivate Warriors of Light to defeat the power of Chaos. Having Jack end up wearing the Warrior of Light outfit might imply there is another redemption route for him in which he ends up as the hero he originally was instead of an antagonist.

The ending scene also teases the appearance of Emperor Mateus, the main villain of Final Fantasy II. This encounter has been incoming for some time now because Strangers of Paradise players get to visit Castle Palamecia, which is actually the home of Emperor Maetus. This also means the game might intend to recontextualize the events of Final Fantasy II in some form or another, but the significance of the emperor’s appearance is yet to be made clear.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is now available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. It received two story expansions since launch, named Trials of the Dragon King and Wanderer of the Rift, respectively. The two story expansions, as well as Different Future, are available to all season pass owners for no extra cost.
