The Oscar winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a triumphant masterpiece from Sony Animation, unveiling groundbreaking new animation techniques – and a thrilling story that inspired everyone who saw it. So it came as no surprise that a sequel film, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, was greenlit shortly after its 2018 release. Originally meant to be out in theaters earlier this year, fans have been chomping at the bit to return to the Spider-Verse. Good things come to those who wait, though, because today the first official Across the Spider-Verse trailer has been unveiled.

Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) is back for another adventure into the Spider-Verse along with some old friends like Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) and Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson), as well as some new ones including Miguel O’Hara a.k.a. Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman (Issa Rae) and Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya). However, there’s a new threat in the form of The Spot (Jason Schwartzman).

Official synopsis:

Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar®-winning Spider-Verse saga, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.

It’s a true blue multiverse of madness with cameos galore. The internet is already abuzz seeing the Insomniac video game version of Spidey in the Across the Spider-Verse trailer.

Across the Spider-Verse trailerAcross the Spider-Verse features a script by returning producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, along with Dave Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings). Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson are the directors with Into the Spider-Verse director Peter Ramsey serving in an executive producer role this time around.

The filmmakers have indeed upped their game for Across the Spider-Verse, employing six different art styles. As Miller told Empire:

“The two that you saw in the teaser trailer were what’s called Earth-50101, which we’re calling ‘Mumbattan’ – that’s based on an Indian comic-book look – and Nueva York from Spider-Man 2099’s world. That’s based on Syd Mead-style illustrations of what the future might look like. There’s also Gwen’s world, which is Earth-65. And that was a watercolour-wash style that’s reminiscent of the covers of her comic books.”

Expect a third film entitled Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse set to arrive in theaters on March 29, 2024.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse arrives in theaters June 2, 2023.
