God Of War Ragnarok Will Feature Transmog System

In a recent Discord developer Q&A with Santa Monica Studio, design lead Mihir Sheth reportedly revealed that the upcoming God of War Ragnarok will have some sort of transmog feature. MP1st transcribed their reply as “the short answer is yes. There is a way to do it… it’s there in the game.”

Transmog is a term mostly associated with MMORPGs, like World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy XIV, that have a heavy focus on constantly changing and upgrading your gear. Whenever a player finds an item with objectively higher stats than that what they currently have, they’re essentially obligated to switch to it lest they place themselves at a disadvantage. The problem is that often a player won’t like how a piece of gear looks, or they’ll find it clashes with their current matching set.

Transmog allows the player, usually for the cost of some in-game currency, to swap the look of a particular piece of gear for that of any other gear they own, while suffering no change to its stats. God of War (2018) had some light RPG elements to it, including gear with stats, and a common complaint from players was that they had to sacrifice their preferred look for Kratos in order to equip the bonuses they needed.

It is worth noting that Sheth didn’t outright confirm the presence of a transmog system in God of War Ragnarok, but instead stated more vaguely that “there is a way to do it,” suggesting that the system may not be as robust or as option-packed as some would like. Fans will have to wait and see once they get their hands on the game.

Although, not all fans. As previously reported, God of War Ragnarok was, and possibly still is, being sold early by unnamed retailers, meaning that many have already started playing it. Santa Monica Studio figurehead Cory Balrog expressed his frustration that fans would have to be dodging spoilers two weeks prior to the game’s launch, and he also openly pondered the value of ‘install discs’, meaning discs that actually don’t have any game date in them, but simply allow the player to download the game online, once it hits its launch date.

God of War Ragnarok releases on November 9th, exclusively for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
