CD Projekt Red has announced that a remake of The Witcher is currently in the works, and will be developed by Polish studio, Fool’s Theory. Despite not being developed by CD Projekt Red themselves, the studio did confirm that they would have “full creative superivsion” over the project.
“We are thrilled to announce that The Witcher Remake is being worked on! That’s right, the game that started it all is being rebuilt from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5”, reads a new blog post on the official website of The Witcher. The post goes on to state that the game is currently in the early development stage at Fool’s Theory, but there are veteran Witcher series staff involved in the development.
Originally codenamed as “Canis Majoris”, CD Projekt Red said that they “want to ensure that the game is created with the utmost care and attention to detail”. As such, the studio said that it’s still going to be a while until the remake is discussed in further detail.
Adam Badowski, Head of Studio at CD Projekt Red, said “The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD PROJEKT RED. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger”.
The studio head goes on to express how some of the team at Fool’s Theory have worked on previous games in The Witcher series, and know the source material well. “They know how to make incredible and ambitious games”, Badowski said about Fool’s Theory.
It’s a busy time for the team at CD Projekt Red, as the studio confirmed earlier this year that they are also working on a new IP, as well as a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. An expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, titled Phantom Liberty, was also announced. With a next-gen upgrade for The Witcher 3 also still set to be released this year, it’s likely going to be quite sometime until we get our hands on The Witcher Remake.
