Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords is coming to Nintendo Switch and it’s getting a better ending.

No, it’s not the Sith vs Jedi dance-off we’ve been craving ever since Star Wars Kinect came out, but the Switch version of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II will get a free piece of downloadable content, dubbed the “Restored Content DLC”, which restores some formerly unfinished content to the game, including an improved ending.

This DLC has its roots in the PC-based “Sith Lords Restored Content Modification” project. KoToR II, created by Obsidian Entertainment, was – and is – a good game, but it’s obvious that Obsidian were under pressure to finish. Consequently, chunks of the vanilla game – in particular the ending – feel rushed or unfinished.

Fans discovered that a lot of the unfinished content was still there in the game, just inaccessible to players. For example, there’s a mission where murderdroid HK47 destroys a factory that’s been churning out copies of him. The mod has been in development for some time but Aspyr, who publish both the Switch and PC version, reached out to the team behind the project. And, since Aspyr has access to the source code, they helped the team complete the project.

The result is that while PC players can download and run the free Restored Content mod, Nintendo Switch players will have the same option, though the DLC won’t necessarily be available on the day of release.

If you’ve never played Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, you’re in for a real treat. It takes place thousands of years before the original Star Wars trilogy, meaning that anything can happen. It also sports Obsidian’s nuanced take on morality, meaning that your choices are more complex than hugging a Porg or dropping it into a blender. In short, you should strap on your lightsaber and dive right in.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II arrives digitally on the Nintendo Switch this June 8th, priced at $15.00.
