The biggest gaming news of the week: May 27, 2022

0

It’s time once again to look back on the video game industry’s biggest stories, then wince in disgust. In fairness, that’s my involuntary reaction towards everything these days. Being cynical beyond all reason has its drawbacks.

Truth be told, things were more exciting than last week. Witcher 4 development is moving along, Elden Ring fans are creating a seamless co-op mod, and Lord of the Rings: Gollum is actually coming out! Yeah, there weren’t any earth-shattering reveals, but let’s be happy that nothing big got delayed.

As part of Hollywood’s never-ending quest to adapt every major video game property, the Twisted Metal and Horizon Zero Dawn shows are moving forward. The former has Nev Campbell, so I’m sort of interested. Speaking of film stars, legendary actor Ray Liotta passed away, and GTA: Vice City fans are really feeling that loss.

But let’s move on from the honorable mentions and look at the big stories from this week.

Modern Warfare 2 gets a release date

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is coming out on Oct. 28, 2022, probably for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms. We still haven’t seen this one in motion, but an upcoming preview event may deliver the goods. Or is it a care package? I haven’t touched this series in years, so effective puns are a no-go.

Call of Duty studio forms first-ever AAA union

Raven Software QA testers formed the first-ever union at a major U.S. game studio. It’s an incredible achievement, especially since this team regularly works on Call of Duty: Warzone — unprecedented stuff within the games industry, and frankly, it should’ve happened years ago.

Elon Musk’s Elden Ring build is terrible

Nobody can stop talking about the world’s richest man, mostly because he never logs off social media. If Elon’s character build in Elden Ring is any indication, then he’s not nearly as bright as his fans claim he is. Come on, man — what are you doing with two shields equipped?

Morbius takes over Twitch

There’s no question that Morbius is one of the worst films this year, but the memes are incredible. For example, did you know of his signature “alright, no more BS” catchphrase? I stole that joke. Seriously though, people are streaming the movie on Twitch just to roast it. The kids are alright, indeed.

Cyberpunk 2077 expansion detail leaks

So that expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 seemingly leaked online. Tons of character dialogue is just floating around out there, and it looks like Keanu Reeves get silenced. Of course, there’s a chance none of this is real, but we won’t know until the DLC drops next year.

Marvel MMO gets canceled

The Marvel MMO from Daybreak Games isn’t happening anymore. Only six months after announcing the game, publisher EG7 will redistribute the investment funds to other projects. Yeah, it sucks. MMORPGs are a considerable risk, though, so I get it.

That’s about it for big headlines this week. See you all in seven days!
