Them’s Fightin’ Herds, coming to consoles this Autumn, had us shaking our heads when we first heard about it.
Why? Because brawler Them’s Fightin’ Herds began life as a My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fighting game until Hasbro sent the developer a cease and desist. We can’t believe that Mane6 thought Hasbro, who own the rights to My Little Pony, would let them get away with a game where the ponies pummelled each other into oblivion.
Fortunately, that wasn’t the end of the game and, minus the My Little Pony characters, it morphed into Them’s Fightin’ Herds. Even better, Lauren Faust – who created the original My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic series came on board, crafting some of the four-legged characters.

Now, after hitting the PC in 2020, it’s coming to PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. It lets you play as one of several four-legged fighters, taking on human players, computer-controlled foes and, if you so desire, diving into the dungeon-crawling story mode.
The latter’s pixel-art looks a little jarring compared to the absolutely gorgeous animated brawls but, alongside the tutorial and training mode, seems like a smart way to let players get some practice in. Because you will need to time to get to grips with Them’s Fightin’ Herds, even if you’re a seasoned Street Fighter II player. For a start, characters are longer than they are tall, the opposite of most one-on-one brawlers.
Aside from the console release, there’s also a season pass in the work that’ll add four new characters to both the PC and console versions. We have our fingers crossed for some celebrity cameos – Roach from The Witcher 3, anyone?
Them’s Fightin’ Herds arrives on digitally and physically Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox this Autumn. You can pre-order a Deluxe Edition of the physical console release or if, if you can’t wait, you can pick it up on PC right now.
