How to succesfully attack or defend a castle

Games like Rust and Minecraft’s anarchy servers have shown that there’s a lot of fun to be had in building up a grand base, only to have people try and break down the doors. If you want to play V Rising without the threat of coming under siege, then the PvE mode is right for you, but there are plenty of people out there who enjoy the thrill of battle with other players.

If you’re one of those players, then you’ll want to know not only how to keep yourself safe, but how to get all the juicy loot other players have stored away. In this guide, we’re going to take you through the best ways to keep your castle defended and fight off intruders on V Rising PvP servers. Then, we’re going to teach you the best ways to break down those defences when you attack.

V Rising PvP Modes

Before you get started, there are three different types of PvP modes you can play, all with slightly different restrictions, so make sure to choose what’s right for you.

Standard PvP – Play the regular PvE game as normal, but with the option to fight/raid other players. Can play in a clan of up to 4 people.
Duos PvP – Guarantees a maximum of 2 people in a clan, so you won’t be overwhelmed by numbers alone.
Full Loot PvP – Allows players to loot everything from you when you die. You’ll respawn with nothing and have to start over.

You can also create your own custom servers where things like clan size, PvP, and looting are entirely customizable.

Defending your castle

When you’re on the defensive, there are plenty of tricks you can employ to slow raiders down and weaken them before you come to blows.

First of all, make sure your castle is placed in a good defensive position, preferable in such a way that any attackers will have to come from one direction, we talk about this in more detail in our V Rising beginners guide. By the same token, construct your castle in such a way to control the raiders’ movements, and make the entrance to your castle a maze of walls, locked doors, and other obstacles.

The longer the raiders have to spend trying to break into your castle, the more time you have to prepare, and the more resources they’ll waste getting to you. Keep them distracted for even longer by paving the way with decoy chests full of junk to draw their attention. If you can sacrifice one or two valuables in these chests, it’ll make them want to keep digging rather than ignoring them.

If they finally break through, then you’re going to enter combat and pull out all of your best skills. If you’re far enough into the game that you have servants, place their coffins near to where you intend to fight the raiders and keep them between you and the enemies. In case you’re defeated, make sure your castle heart and valuable chests are as far away from the entrance as possible to waste their time a bit more.

Raiding a castle

The first thing you need to think about when raiding a castle is how you’re going to deal with the defences we just talked about. Try and find another way into the castle to take them by surprise, avoid the complicated layout they painstakingly set up, and don’t get distracted by junk chests along the way. The attacking side of the game isn’t as fleshed out yet, but there are still a few must-have tools.

Firstly, good ol’ explosives. Nice and simple, if there’s a wall in your way just blow it up. The explosives you can create through alchemy will annihilate the low and mid-tier castle walls, but it’ll take a bit more power to crack the reinforced walls available in the late game. Still, it’s always good to have at least five on hand, as they can be used in combat too.

The most powerful weapon in your arsenal is the Seige Golems. To unlock these you need to beat the level 48 boss, Terah the Geomancer, as she will give you the V Blood necessary to craft them. You then need 200 stone bricks, 200 gem dust, 16 scourge stone, and 12 greater blood essence to craft one. Activating it is a simple matter of summoning it on the ground in front of you.

These hulking beasts have loads of health and will destroy any walls or doors in their path, so you won’t stand a chance of getting into a well-fortified castle without one, preferably more. They do have downsides, though. For one, when you summon one the entire server will be notified, so you’ll give up any hope of a stealthy approach. For two, they only stick around 300 seconds, which might seem like a lot, but if there are a lot of walls in your way, they could timeout before you reach the end, which is why you should always bring a few to the fight if you can.
