Fall Guys is going free to play on June 21st, the same that the multiplayer wobble-em-up arrives on Nintendo Switch and Xbox.

There have, for some time, been rumblings that creator Mediatonic was going to take this route. Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout (to give it its full title), is an online-only battle royale version of Takeshi’s Castle which launched on PC and PS4 back in August 2020.

Since then, Mediatonic has introduced a wealth of new costumes, levels, obstacles and more, all in the name of keeping the game fresh. Well, that and making money, since real-world money can be used to buy in-game costumes, though you can unlock costumes by earning “crowns” in-game.

Now, as of June 21st, you’ll be able to dive into Fall Guys absolutely free. That same day it’ll also arrive on PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and the Epic Games Store.

The move was confirmed yesterday, with a Mediatronic livestream and a mini-trailer voiced by Matt Berry, who we choose to imagine is in character as Steven Toast. But hang on… what happens to the people who paid for the game? While some Twitterati have been calling for refunds, Mediatonic has confirmed that long-term Fall Guys players, presumably those who purchased it, will get a “Legacy Pack” containing a season pass and more.

One other bonus of Fall Guys going free-to-play, is that, as confirmed by Sony, you won’t have to subscribe to PlayStation Plus in order to play and you can expect the same to apply on the Xbox. So what’s the catch? So far, nothing – though we wouldn’t be entirely surprised if, at some point down the line, the reward system was rejigged to make microtransactions a little more profitable.

Fall Guys will be available, free-to-play, for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch this June 21st.
