Welcome to GLHF‘s first-ever weekly news roundup! The place where I’ll remind you that video games are incredibly sick and equally as stupid. Seriously, what other industry obsesses over inane details like Master Chief losing his virginity? Nowhere else, friends.
This week was all over the place tonally as far as news goes. On the one hand, there were stories fascinating stories like Duke Nukem Forever‘s E3 2001 demo leaking and someone beating 12 Assassin’s Creed games without taking damage. While on the other, Remedy won’t show us Alan Wake 2 anytime soon. I’m certain that Sam Lake wants to punish me, specifically.
But enough honorable mentions already, let’s take a look at the biggest news stories from May 9 through May 13, 2022.
Starfield gets delayed to 2023
Well, you knew this one was coming. Bethesda’s space-faring adventure Starfield isn’t coming out until next year. It seems as though the development team simply needs more time to get this one right, which is probably for the best. After the unmitigated disaster that was Cyberpunk 2077, no AAA studio wants to release a shoddy open-world RPG.
EA stops working with FIFA.
After working together for nearly 30 years, EA dropped the FIFA license. The series will live on as EA Sports FC and will even have most of the big soccer players and clubs. FIFA President Gianni Infantino clapped back at EA’s announcement with a somewhat passive-aggressive statement. It’s all weird, especially for us folks who know nothing about professional soccer.
Bandai Namco gives Let Me Solo Her a gift
Anyone knee-deep in Elden Ring (most of you) has undoubtedly heard of Let Me Solo Her (LMSH), the player dedicating his time to blitzing the ridiculously challenging Malenia boss. After his 1000th kill, publisher Bandai Namco promised it would send LMSH a gift. Feel-good vibes emanate from every facet of this story. I love it.
PlayStation staff allegedly upset with CEO
Now onto the not-so-fun story this week. PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan reportedly sent a company-wide email urging staff to “respect differences of opinion” regarding abortion rights. Then, he allegedly went on for five paragraphs in the same email about his two cat’s birthdays for some reason, which apparently upset employees. Understandably so! I’m no corporate big-wig, but maybe don’t touch heavy topics then immediately switch over to cat small talk? Just a thought.
The Dead Space remake gets a launch date
After 10 years in cryostasis, Dead Space is coming back. Earlier this week, EA Motive surprised everyone with a release date announcement for the remake — Jan. 27, 2022, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. That’s much sooner than what I was expecting, especial since we’ve still not seen much of the Dead Space remake. Ah well, there’s an extensive showcase around Halloween that’ll surely deliver the goods.
Shepard (probably) isn’t in Mass Effect 4
Earlier this week, Bioware’s gear store began selling a lithograph for the next Mass Effect. At first, its product description hinted that Mass Effect trilogy protagonist Commander Shepard would return, which is confusing since Shepard dies in several of Mass Effect 3‘s endings. After loads of rampant speculation, project director Michael Gamble insisted it was a mistake. Kind of sus, as the kids say.
Konami begins DMCA takedowns of Silent Hill ‘leak’
As a diehard Silent Hill fan, this one is a rollercoaster of emotions. YouTuber Dusk Golem is fairly well-known in survival horror circles for leaking games well ahead of time. Sometimes his information is dead-on. Other times, he’s way off the mark. It happens to all of us!
On Thursday, Dusk Golem shared several screens allegedly from a new Silent Hill game. Many of us took it with a grain of salt at the time. However, some hours later, Konami issued DMCA takedowns of the screenshots. Given that the company owns Silent Hill, it looks like the leak was probably authentic.
