While developer Obsidian Entertainment is seemingly getting ready for a showcase of its upcoming RPG Avowed in June, the studio has also apparently transitioned the game to a newer version of Unreal Engine 5. Rumours also indicate that Gears of War 4 and 5 developer The Coalition helped Obsidian make the transition to Unreal Engine 5.3.

According to Windows Central’s Jez Corden, Obsidian received support to move the game on to Unreal Engine 5.3 from Xbox’s tech teams, as well as The Coalition. How the game engine’s newer version will affect development going forward, or what features it brings to the table that Obsidian wants to make use of are currently unknown.

Interestingly enough, The Coalition hasn’t released a game of its own in quite some time, with Gears 5 having come out in September 2019, and its Hivebusters DLC coming out a year later. Since then, The Coalition has been working on unannounced projects, two of which are rumoured to have been cancelled, while also working as a support studio for other games. Leaks have claimed that the studio is currently working on the next mainline Gears game, which is reportedly set to be unveiled at the Xbox Games Showcase.

Avowed, on the other hand, is slated for release in Fall 2024. The title got a gameplay showcase back in January, and is coming to PC and Xbox Series X/S. It is allegedly targeting a November release.
