Dragon Ball FighterZ has been out for fans to purchase and play since early 2018. It’s only fair to say that the game, to this day, is still going strong and has been regarded as one of the best Dragon Ball fighting video games ever. With so many different characters after all of the DLC has been released, it can be pretty overwhelming to choose one to three characters to main.
Adult Gohan is easily one of the best characters in the game’s extensive roster, especially with his Potential Unleashed mechanic. Gohan has some incredible moves and utilities that make the character so powerful when picked up by a skilled player — but a few tips and tricks can go a long way toward making him shine during a match.
Adult Gohan is chosen for a select few reasons, one of those reasons being that he has access to the unique and powerful ability to transform. This transformation is Potential Unleashed, and it has seven different levels. For each level, it will cost one bar of ki.
At level 1, Gohan gains access to machine-gun punch, faster Jet Uppercut, and his Back-Attack auto-tracks. At level three, Gohan can double air-dash. At level five, Gohan can cancel any normal moves into other normals. At level 7. Gohan becomes unstoppable as he can essentially cancel any move into any other move.
Many Z Fighters in Dragon Ball FighterZ all have combos that work for every single character, aside from the auto-combos. As such, Gohan has plenty of combo potential, and one of the best strings to utilize to gain access to his variety of moves is this one:
2M, 5M, JL, 5M, 2H, DR, 5L, 5M, 2H, J, 5L, 5M, (variation here). One of the most common ways to end this combo string is to utilize Gohan’s in-air ki blast, and then use the teleporting back-attack to send the opponent flying toward the ground.
Adult Gohan has access to some of the most unique mechanics in Dragon Ball FighterZ, with one feature of the character only sharing comparison with Android 17. This is the fast fall that Gohan can do at any level. In order to perform this simple move, the player must simply press 2S.
This will send Gohan flying incredibly fast toward the ground. This can be utilized in many ways, and at level 7, Gohan can surround the opponent with continuous damage. Utilizing this move can help with strings, special attacks, or just easily setting up in the corner.
As stated in a listing above, Adult Gohan gains the ability to air-dash twice when he is at Potential Unleashed level three. This is much like Golden Frieza, who also can air-dash twice. Air-dashing twice puts the player at a significant advantage when it comes to strings and mix-ups.
In a game where mix-ups are arguably the most important skill, Gohan excels when he is at level three. Players should utilize Gohan’s double air-dash when attacking a blocking enemy, or to show off flashy combos that even Tengen would be proud of.
Adult Gohan has more complex mechanics rather than a large move set, but that just opens up possibilities that no other character has. Gohan has an air-only attack — the Machine-Gun Kick. This sends Gohan in a flurry of kicks toward his opponent.
With each variation (L, M, H) the move changes. The heavier the attack is, the more control the player has in moving Gohan when using this move. The H variant allows Gohan to almost clear the entire screen in order to get this move off on an opponent on the other side of the stage. This move is wonderful for loops as well.
Adult Gohan also has access to a special kick that Adult Gohan veterans would always be seen using to add more damage to combo strings. This is Gohan’s Ultimate High Kick. This is simply a quick diagonal-upwards kick.
This kick does 700 damage, can hit opponents in-air, and allows players to come up with some of the most interesting combos to ever be seen in Dragon Ball FighterZ. Even in the “Gohan-Unique Combo,” Gohan can utilize this move on-ground to add more damage before sending the opponent flying through the air.
Like many characters in Dragon Ball FighterZ, Adult Gohan also has access to a beam attack, derived from his former master. This beam attack is the Masenko, which is featured in a nice yellow color. Masenko does 1098 damage and can stop opponents flying toward Gohan or opponents who are switching out.
What makes it stand out from most beam attacks, however, is the fact that Gohan can Dragon-Rush cancel it, so after hitting an opponent, Gohan can immediately follow up. At level 7, this move is cancelable into a flurry of attacks.
Adult Gohan only has a couple of supers in Dragon Ball FighterZ, though in all fairness, his one-bar super is pretty powerful. Gohan’s three-bar super is a simple Super Kamehameha beam ultimate.
Initially, this move will feature a Super Saiyan Gohan and Goten charging up a Kamehameha. If the player has Goku on the team, then the move will also have Goku. If Gotenks is on the team, then it will only be Gohan firing a lonesome Kamehameha. This move is best for assists, or for ending combo strings into a KO.
Out of all of the moves that Adult Gohan has access to, the Jet Uppercut may be one of the least used. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the move is bad, but it has niche capability.
The best way to use this move is to have Adult Gohan charge to Potential Unleashed level seven, and then not only will he have a faster Jet Uppercut, but he will be able to cancel the move into other special moves. This gives him access to a common Gohan loop that utilizes the Jet Uppercut several times.
Now, one of the more overlooked yet more important aspects of Dragon Ball FighterZ is the fact that players can call in assist attacks from teammates. Gohan has three different assists. One is a Masenko beam attack, and another is the simple C assist which is the same for every character and offers an easy combo string, but the next one is arguably the best one.
All it is is Gohan’s Machine-Gun Punch. This move needs to hit up close, but the rewards are pretty fair. Players can utilize this assist in order to mix up the opponent by dashing behind them because Machine-Gun Punch hits several times.
