Water-Types are known for their defensive abilities with high HP and Defense stats. They know how to hold their ground when in battle against some of the strongest Trainers. In Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, players have a large selection to choose from with Water-Type Pokémon, some new and some returning from previous generations. Below, we have gone over the best Water-Types to aid your selection process.

10/10 Slowking

Slowking takes the cake when it comes to Special Defense and HP, but outside of this, the Pokémon is incredibly slow, which is precisely why it has the name Slowking. The Pokémon is a Water/Psychic Dual-Type, allowing it to have moves that are effective against Fire, Ground, Rock, Fighting, and Poison-Types.

Despite its slow nature, it can be a great defensive Pokémon and has the ability to prevent itself from being Confused and cannot be infatuated, intimidated, or taunted. Its move set that it can learn includes many Status Moves, so you can apply these to your opponent and defeat them easily. Slowking can also use moves to recover its own HP.

9/10 Toxapex

Toxapex is a Pokémon with one of the highest Defense and Special Defense stats in the game. Outside of this, though, the Pokémon is relatively weak in terms of Attack. It won’t be the one on the field that will deal much damage to your opponent, but as a Dual Water/Poison-Type, you can apply Status Moves to slowly deteriorate your competition.

Toxapex has the ability to prevent being Paralyzed, and can turn its attacks into Critical Hits if it becomes Poisoned. While not the strongest Water-Type, it can be a useful addition to your team with its added Poison-Type.

8/10 Floatzel

Floatzel is a great balanced Pokémon, with especially high Speed and Attack. Its Speed rivals that of Persian and Gengar, among many others. Of its stats, the only ones that are significantly low are its Defense and Special Defense. But with its incredible Speed, you should be able to defeat your opponent before they can even attack you.

Floatzel is especially useful when it is raining on the field. Floatzel’s Speed will double if these weather conditions are met. Floatzel is a solid option with the ability to deal some high damage to your opponent as quickly as possible.

7/10 Clawitzer

Clawitzer is another new Pokémon added to the roster in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. It has great Special Defense and Special Attack stats, allowing it to deal decent damage with its Water-Type moves. The rest of Clawitzer’s stats are relatively average, but are enough to keep the Pokémon afloat in battle.

As a sole Water-Type, you can use Clawitzer as an offensive Pokémon against Fire, Ground, and Rock-Types. It also has the ability to increase the damage of Aura and Pulse moves by 50 percent.

6/10 Golduck

Golduck is the evolution of Psyduck and is a classic from the first generation of Pokémon. This Pokémon is always a great choice for your team as the main Water-Type due to its overall balanced stats. Its strongest stat is Special Attack, making its Water moves incredibly effective against Fire, Ground, and Rock.

Golduck also comes with the ability to negate any Weather Effects and the use of explosive, self-destructing moves. The Pokémon can learn incredibly strong Water and Psychic-Type offensive moves, including Hydro Pump at Level 40.

5/10 Cloyster

Another notable member from the first generation is Cloyster. As a Dual-Type of Water and Ice, its moves can be incredibly effective against Fire, Ground, Rock, Grass, Flying, and Dragon. While its Attack stat isn’t the highest in the game, Cloyster’s Defense is second only to Avalugg.

Cloyster is one of the hardest Pokémon for opponents to one-hit. If you have Cloyster on your team, it is certain to hold out well on the field while dishing out strong offensive attacks. Cloyster will also be protected from Critical Hits, and if it uses a move that can hit from 2 to 5 times, it will always hit 5 times.

4/10 Vaporeon

Eevee has the ability to evolve into many types, with Vaporeon being one of them. This Pokémon is a must-have in the Water-Type range with its high HP, Special Attack, and Special Defense stats.

With its high HP, your opponent will struggle to finish off Vaporeon, making it easy for Vaporeon to retaliate with Water-Type moves. Also, if it is hit by any Water moves, it will instead restore its HP rather than take damage. This Pokémon is a fantastic offensive Water-Type, and should certainly be on one of your teams.

3/10 Dondozo

The giant, whale-like Titan Pokémon, Dondozo, lives up to its size with its high HP and Defense. Good luck to any opponents trying to take this Pokémon down, as it will take a lot of time to do so.

Dondozo also has a good Attack stat, making it a strong offensive option as well. It can deal high damage with its learned move set, including Double-Edge and Wave Crash, both with a power of 120. Similar to Slowking, this Pokémon cannot be infatuated, intimidated, or taunted, and can ignore the opponent’s stat changes when attacking.

2/10 Quaquaval

If you chose Quaxly as your starter Pokémon in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, its final evolution of Quaquaval not only has a great design, but has solid balanced stats. This Pokémon is a Dual-Type of Fighting and Water, giving it an advantage over Fire, Ground, Rock, Normal, Ice, Dark, and Steel-Types.

Quaquaval has an incredible Attack stat and decent HP, with the ability to learn strong Fighting and Water-Type moves later, including Close Combat and Wave Crash. This Pokémon is a great offensive main for your team and will deal a large amount of damage.

1/10 Gyarados

Gyarados is almost always at the top of Water-Type lists, as there have yet to be many Pokémon in all the generations that out-shine it. Evolving from the unassuming Magikarp, Gyarados has all-around great stats, with especially notable Attack, HP, and Special Defense stats.

This Pokémon is in most of the games in each generation for a reason. It can learn incredibly overpowered moves, especially Hyper Beam which has a Power of 150. It will be hard for your opponents to break this Pokémon before it takes down the opponent first. It will also initially decrease the opponent’s Attack through Intimidate.
