10 Best Grab Attacks In The Game, Ranked

0

In FromSoftware’s Elden Ring, any enemy attack is an attack worth avoiding. Whether it be due to stamina management, unlucky circumstances, or bad timing, the Tarnished is bound to get hit once in a while. Some attacks—especially grab attacks—are frustrating to be hit by. Some grab attacks, however, are so stylistic, so cool in their animation and execution, that they are (almost) worth getting hit.

Notably, the Tarnished also has a few grab attacks to use as well, although they are fairly limited in quantity. Different types of enemies and individual bosses will have distinct move sets to watch out for, especially if they have a crushing grab attack. From Tarnished to everyday enemies to special bosses, here are some of the best-executed grab attacks in Elden Ring.

DUALSHOCKERS VIDEO OF THE DAY

10/10 Black Knife Assassin

The Black Knife Assassins already get points for being dexterous, fashionable, and key to the storyline (that is, The Night of Black Knives). As assassins, it makes sense that they would get up close and personal. Ordina, Liturgical Town is filled with invisible Black Knife assassins — their invisibility makes it easy for them to sneak up on the Tarnished, land a grab attack, and dramatically stab (and likely kill) your character.

9/10 Godrick The Grafted

Elden Ring's Godrick The Grafted Emitting Fire In Front Of A Tower

Godrick the Grafted is one of several early-game “skill check” bosses, meaning he is the threshold on which players must prove themselves to advance in the game. In the latter half of the fight, Godrick grafts a dragon’s head onto one of his arms, effectively using it as a flamethrower.

His grab attack catches the Tarnished in this dragon’s maw while breathing fire simultaneously. Godrick then slams the player into the ground, still breathing fire and dealing damage the whole time.

8/10 Inescapable Frenzy

There are very few options for the Tarnished to use a grab attack — the Madness-based Incantation, Inescapable Frenzy, is one of the available options. Found between the Cathedral of the Forsaken and the Frenzied Flame Proscription, this magical attack is limited insofar as it can only be used on human NPCs and other players.

Even so, the visual effect of being maddened and then passing that madness off to someone else in an aggressive fashion is an incredibly compelling sight for combat.

7/10 Fallingstar Beast

Okay, this example is technically not a grab in that an enemy is physically putting their hands, claws, or weapons on you. The Fallingstar Beast uses Gravity Magic in a variety of ways. One of its spells produces a wide AoE that looks like the surrounding rocks are being lifted into the air. After a moment, the Tarnished is suspended in the air, only to be slammed back into the ground. Although this move induces a feeling of helplessness, it at least provides an aesthetically pleasing view of the battlefield.

6/10 Radagon Of The Golden Order

Instead of using his hammer to reforge the Elden Ring, Radagon spends his time using his hammer to absolutely pound any Tarnished who walks into the Erdtree.

He can aggregate holy magic in his left hand, charging up his lunge to pin down the Tarnished. Afterward, he brings his hammer down directly, with the second hit sending the Tarnished flying in the opposite direction. Some distance between him, of course, is not exactly safe either, as he often follows up with one of several possible ranged attacks.

5/10 Hoarah Loux, Warrior

Elden Ring Godfrey, the First Elden Lord rises wielding an ax

Godfrey, the First Elden Lord, sheds all pretense of decorum and lordliness after he takes a solid beating. Sacrificing his ethereal lion, he transforms into the warrior of the badlands, Hoarah Loux.

This version of the boss actually has two grab attacks. In the less impressive one, he simply winds up his right arm, grabs the Tarnished, and then tosses them into the ground. The significantly more impressive grab, however, has multiple steps — he pounces, using his hands like claws to propel the Tarnished into the air, only to grab the Tarnished midair while jumping about 20 feet high. When Hoarah Loux lands, he makes sure to smash any feeble ambitions of winning right into the ground.

4/10 Malenia, Blade of Miquella

Malenia’s fight is already rough. She has two phases — the latter deals with Scarlet Rot, heals herself when she deals damage, and her infamous Waterfowl Dance is nearly impossible to dodge at first. As if these things were not already bad enough, she can easily land devastating hits with her high mobility. One of the most devastating (in terms of both raw damage to the Tarnished and psychological damage to the player) is her grab attack.

Grabbing the Tarnished with her left hand, she spins as she throws your character up in the air. She then follows up with a brutal flourish, vertically impaling the Tarnished on her sword and subsequently casting off the body.

3/10 Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy

Elden Ring Rykard Lord Of Blasphemy With Tarnished

Similar to Hoarah Loux, Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy, has two grab attacks, each with a different degree of damage and style. The less impressive of the two (but still quite severe on its own) is a grab attack whereby Rykard bites the Tarnished. Holding your character in his reptilian maw, Rykard proceeds to slam on the ground twice before letting go.

If this grab attack kills the Tarnished, however, the end of the animation looks markedly different. Instead of slamming on the ground twice, Rykard only slams on the ground once, throws the body of the Tarnished vertically, and then swallows them whole.

2/10 Elden Beast

The Elden Beast is the final boss of the game. Aesthetically, this boss fight is already beautiful, with orchestral music, a pristine, watery stage, and magical attacks that look like holy fireworks.

During its grab attack, the Elden Beast treats the Tarnished like Marika (or, more appropriately, like the many Tarnished who are crucified along the roads of The Lands Between). After charging up a magical sphere in its left hand, the Elden Beast crucifies the Tarnished (on what appears to be a large Rune Arc) and then stabs them with a sequence of magical spears.

1/10 Astel, Naturalborn of the Void

Astel Natural Born of the Void in Elden Ring

Certainly one of the more terrifying bosses on this list, Astel is a spindly, insectoid alien with a massive skull for a face. Astel actually has several grab attacks—all of them are devastating and frustrating, but credit where credit’s due for the stylistic flair of these attacks.

Each of these grab attacks occurs directly after Astel teleports away. In one instance, it can seemingly teleport on top of the Tarnished, immediately sinking in its pincers to get a kill. Another grab, however, features Astel duplicating itself many times over after it teleports; this results in countless Astels emerging from teleportation, throwing their hands in a desperate bid to grab the Tarnished.
