10 best games to play after Fallout

So you’ve just completed your big Fallout replay and are left with nothing else to do. Well, don’t worry, because here is a list of games that would be perfect to play after Fallout.

10. Destiny 2

Alright, so Destiny 2 doesn’t have too much to do with Fallout in terms of immediate aesthetics. One game is a post apocalyptic RPG, and the other is a sci-fi shooter that takes place centuries after a post-apocalypse. See, in actuality, Fallout and Destiny 2 share a few things in common and this could be the perfect game to play afterward. Sure you’re essentially a god with all the abilities at your disposal as opposed to a lowly Vault Dweller, but don’t let that stop you.

Now is also the perfect time to jump into Destiny 2 to get settled with the game to enjoy all of the content it has to offer. Even if you’ve never played Destiny before, jump in as soon as you can so you can catch up with everyone else and look forward to new upcoming content. And if you need more convincing, here are 10 reasons to jump back into Destiny 2.

9. Wasteland 3

This one is going to appeal to fans of classic Fallout more than anything. But if you’re a fan of CRPGs too, then this will be right up your alley. Wasteland 3 is a post-apocalyptic turn-based strategy game with a focus on tense gameplay and tough decisions. This game is a great jumping on point for Wasteland too, so don’t worry about needing to catch up with the first two games.

The other big positive here is that this game supports online co-op. So if you’ve got a friend you want to tackle this game with, by all means bring them aboard. If you’re still itching for that post apocalypse setting you’ll not find one more appropriate than this.

8. Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 is not only an open world zombie slaying joyride, it’s also a game with a dropkick so naturally I should end the pitch here. But more than that, Dying Light 2 has received a ton of updates since its launch in February 2022. The developer has improved that game’s parkour gameplay and introduced guns to the world to make combat feel a little more varied. Which to be fair is not something that needed to be done. Dropkicking a zombie through off a building literally never gets old.

There are things that Dying Light 2 doesn’t do so well. For instance, its story is a little barebones and struggles to be very satisfying by the end. But the gameplay more than makes up for that and you can also bring up to three friends with you to play four-player co-op. Play this one if you want a sandbox adventure where slaying zombies feels incredible.

7. The Outer Worlds

The Outer Worlds is a must play for any Bethesda fan who does not want to play another one of Bethesda’s games after Fallout. Because on the surface, The Outer Worlds is incredibly similar to Fallout in a lot of ways. Just with a more familiar sci-fi coat of paint. It’s actually developed by Obsidian Entertainment who made a little game called Fallout: New Vegas.

It’s not fair to wholly compare it to those other games though because The Outer Worlds does stand on its own. And while it may disappoint in some ways, it’s well worth a playthrough if you’re still itching for a first-person RPG experience.

6. Cyberpunk 2077

Recommending Cyberpunk 2077 in this day and age might feel like a personal offense to some. After all, the game has had to shake off its disastrous launch from 2020 and win back its players over the years. In my opinion, CD Projekt Red did that and more with the game’s numerous updates and the launch of Phantom Liberty. At this point, Cyberpunk 2077 is an incredible experience and is only getting better and better with community-made mods. So in that sense, this is one of those games that seems perfect to play after Fallout.

Oddly enough, I imagine Cyberpunk 2077 to be a perfect palette cleanser after playing Fallout. The gameplay systems at work are fairly similar but the worlds on offer are so completely different and each have a distinct tone. So if you’ve not tried Cyberpunk 2077 since its launch, try it again and see if it sticks this time.

5. Bioshock

There was a time when Bioshock felt like the one game that everybody played. But as time has gone on and the series has aged it feels like these games are a bit of a forgotten classic to a degree. So it feels right to recommend Bioshock after Fallout. As far as genre goes, the two series’ are pretty different. But Bioshock’s immersive sim nature makes it an easy game for most players to fit right into. Plus, slinging strange magic in a flooded Art Deco city surrounded by ghosts of the past sounds like a good time to me.

This is a game I especially recommend if you love Fallout’s creepier moments. The first Bioshock has plenty of those sorts of moments as well and deals with some interesting horror themes. Sometimes it’s quite easy to imagine Rapture as a big Vault-Tec experiment gone wrong. But hey at least you can shoot lightning from your hands.

4. Baldur’s Gate 3

Any list of games to play after an RPG will likely include Baldur’s Gate 3. Even if you’ve just beaten Baldur’s Gate 3 there are going to be people that tell you to play it again. And they aren’t wrong about that because this game is incredibly replayable. Even if you’ve been through it four times by now, there are sure to be things you’ve never done or seen before.

For those that haven’t Baldur’s Gate 3 yet, this is the perfect gateway into the realm of the CRPG genre. It’s also an amazing introduction to D&D and the concepts that the tabletop game works with. Alongside that you have an incredible story, brilliantly tense gameplay, and a fascinating cast of characters.

3. Starfield

Bethesda released its most ambitious game to date in 2023 to fairly mixed reception. Its approach to galaxy-wide exploration is contentious at best. Some players absolutely love Starfield, while others struggle to wholly immerse themselves in it. And that’s why it’s hard to wholeheartedly recommend. It’s one of Bethesda’s biggest games though and one that longtime Bethesda fans may adore after playing Fallout.

As we all know too well, time makes Bethesda games much better. Not because of what Bethesda does necessarily, but because of the modding community. And Starfield has plenty of mods that improve on the game and make it a much better experience overall. So if there was any time to jump into Starfield, that time is definitely now.

2. Skyrim

If you thought that Skyrim wouldn’t get on this list somehow then I’m sorry to disappoint. But Skyrim is one of those games that is so hard to get sick of no matter how many times we’ve all played. It and with over a decade of mods that have only become better with time, your newest playthrough of Skyrim could be the greatest yet.

The Elder Scrolls series in general would be a perfect one to dive into after Fallout. And if you’ve somehow never played any of them before now is the time to rectify that. And Skyrim is the perfect game to start with if you want to battle dragons in the nordic mountains. Even typing this out now is making me excited to start up my next playthrough. So let’s get to the next pick and play some games.

1. Metro 2033

The final pick might seem like a bit of a curveball but after Fallout I can’t imagine a better series of games to recommend. Metro 2033, Last Light, and most recently Exodus, pair so well with Fallout you could even imagine them being part of the same universe. If Fallout tackles what a post-apocalytpic nuclear war would do to America, then Metro covers what that would look like in Russia. And it’s a much scarier experience in a lot of ways.

The Metro games have engaging gunplay, and an in-depth narrative to follow along with. But its the horror elements that really make these games work. Journeying around the old Metro tunnels as radioactive mutants and ghosts haunt the railways makes for genuinely scary times.
