Fullmetal Alchemist is one of the greatest anime franchises of all time, and thus it only makes sense that once you finish watching the entire show, you’ll be yearning for something of a similar nature. Edward and Alphonse Elric go through an incredible and arduous journey together — one full of humor, trials, emotion, action, adventure, and everything else that makes a story worth enjoying.

Of course, no two animes are exactly identical, and that’s definitely for the best. Plenty still exists, however, that have aspects in common with Fullmetal Alchemist. If you enjoyed riding the FMA train and wished the trip had never ended, you’re not alone. Lucky for you, there’s an abundance of amazing anime shows that have the FMA feel to them, and they’re out there just waiting to be discovered.

10 Avatar: The Last Airbender

One of the most basic lessons in alchemy is that everything in existence is made up of four elements — just ask Ed from Fullmetal Alchemist, and he’ll be sure to tell you the same thing. Then again, Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender could also inform you about all the elements because he can control them.

Manipulation of elements isn’t the only thing these anime shows have in common, either. They have very similar pacing when it comes to plots, each with a storyline that unfolds somewhat gradually with a big build-up to the climax. Fullmetal Alchemists fans will likely enjoy watching ATLA immensely and fall in love with the characters and their journey.

9 Steins;Gate

Another marvelous anime suitable for seekers of a plot just as interesting as Fullmetal Alchemist is Steins;Gate. It’s a bit hard to sum up the complexity of this series details, but then again, it’s pretty difficult to explain the background of the Elric brothers and their path to getting their original bodies back.

Steins;Gate is the story of a mad scientist who somewhat inadvertently creates a way to send text messages back in time via a microwave, of all things. Of course, the plot only thickens from there, but the analytical minds that love FMA are sure to enjoy this anime just as much.

8 Sword Art Online

Those of you that enjoyed the animation style of Fullmetal Alchemist will surely be satisfied with the visuals in Sword Art Online. Sword Art Online is based on the concept of real-life and video games becoming so similar that one can barely distinguish them from each other.

Of course, that’s just the framework behind an absolutely incredible story that follows a heroic main character known as Kirito, who gets stuck inside a highly-advanced virtual reality game called Sword Art Online. Kirito and countless others are trapped in the game, and here’s the kicker: if they die while playing the game, they die in real life too. Other than just the visual styles being similar to Fullmetal Alchemist, Sword Art Online is also similar because it follows the quest of an individual becoming a hero in the somewhat indirect way that FMA did with Edward Elric.

7 Hunter x Hunter

Hunter x Hunter is yet another fantastic anime for fans of Fullmetal Alchemist in search of a show with a comparable feel. This series follows the protagonist, a young boy named Gon, as he sets forth on a mission to become a “Hunter” and determine the whereabouts of his father — an extremely mysterious and famous Hunter himself.

Hunters are basically skilled professionals who have passed certain tests and requirements in return for a status that allows them to track down hidden treasures/artifacts, hunt rare beasts, and partake in other incredible quests. Hunter x Hunter is a really fun anime, yet it also has a deeper-rooted plot like Fullmetal Alchemist. Gon and Edward also have quite a bit in common as main characters of each anime, including some issues regarding their relationship with their fathers.

6 The Seven Deadly Sins

Fullmetal Alchemist often explores the concept of whether one must be defined by their destiny — something that the show has in common with several other anime, including The Seven Deadly Sins. Both of these series are also jam-packed with magnificent fight scenes, with characters in each using unique and incredibly powerful battle tactics.

The Seven Deadly Sins follows the journey of a group of knights (each represented by one of the seven sins) on their quest to achieve redemption. This anime introduces several zany characters with interesting personalities and backstories, so if you enjoyed that aspect of Fullmetal Alchemist, you’d likely feel the same about The Seven Deadly Sins.

5 Death Note

One thing that becomes apparent pretty quickly in Fullmetal Alchemist is how much of a strategic thinker Edward is. If you love the strategizing and quick-thinking characters in FMA, you’ll certainly take a liking to the characters in Death Note.

Death Note is about a young man, Light Yagami, who stumbles upon a magic book that allows its owner to write the names of people they wish to die, and the book makes it happen. There’s a lot of scheming and strategizing among all the characters, and it’s an incredibly exciting anime to watch. FMA fans will also surely appreciate some of the humor spread throughout Death Note.

4 Blood Of Zeus

The primary thing that Blood of Zeus and Fullmetal Alchemist have in common is that in both shows, the main character is set with a seemingly impossible task and must defy all odds in order to complete their goal. For the Elric brothers, that was finding a way to get their original bodies back; for Heron (the main character in Blood of Zeus), it was saving the Earth.

The animation art style of Blood of Zeus is fairly unique and definitely visually appealing, plus it has set up a potentially great storyline. The only other thing that FMA fans looking to start Blood of Zeus should be aware of is that only one season of the anime has been released so far.

3 Naruto

Most of the main characters from the Naruto anime standing together. Including Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, and Kakashi.

Aside from simply being one of the best animes ever created, Naruto has much to offer to Fullmetal Alchemist enthusiasts. Naruto is the story of a young orphaned boy and his path to becoming a respected ninja in his village. That’s a little easier said than done, however, considering he has the demon that destroyed his village years ago sealed inside of him.

The characters in Naruto are easy to root for, though they all seem to have somewhat different goals at times. Although the main character, Naruto, has his differences from Edward Elric, they also have a lot in common. Neither of them ever gives up, they’re both incredibly brave, and even though Naruto isn’t quite as analytical as Edward, they both share the trait of inventive thinking when put into a tough spot. If you want another anime that will put its protagonists up against absolutely everything, check out Naruto, and you won’t be disappointed.

2 Bleach

Bleach follows the tale of Ichigo Kurosaki, a high-schooler who essentially becomes a part-time God of Death through an interesting circumstance. Along with this newfound responsibility and power, Ichigo also discovers that some of his other classmates have access to unique powers.

Other than being just as action-packed as Fullmetal Alchemist, Bleach also shares the commonality of being a spiritually-influenced series. In addition, just as FMA ended up getting a new version with the release of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood a few years later, Bleach had its own reboot several years later down the line after the initial series ended.

1 Attack On Titan

One aspect of Fullmetal Alchemist that is prevalent throughout the series is how much the military is involved in the overall plot and with the Elric brothers trying to complete their goal. Well, if you’re in search of another anime with a bit of a military feel to it, Attack On Titan is your next watch.

Although these shows have obvious differences outside of the mutual military connection, they also have a few things in common. Attack On Titan and FMA have characters with supernatural powers, and both series see these characters battling mutated and monstrous-looking foes. Attack On Titan gives enough of the Fullmetal vibes to satisfy fans but is also a truly incredible story and anime in its own right.
